  • The MFMU Network conducts research related to potential clinical complications of pregnancy with a focus on Maternal and Fetal outcomes for mortality and morbidity.
  • Examples: Prematurity related causes, Pre-term delivery, Diabetes, Thyroid Disease, Multiple Gestation, Pre-Eclampsia, Virus related sequela such as CMV, Sleep apnea, Hypertension, and most recently COVID infections, among anything that is up and coming.
  • My position involves extensive assessment of potential research subjects, recruiting subjects, continual follow up during the pregnancy and delivery, then follow up (short term and long term) for outcomes. While some studies focus on women with the potential for high-risk complications, others focus on prevention in a presumed normal low risk pregnancy.
  • The primary goal is to improve the quality of obstetric care within ACOG guidelines.
  • Labor & Delivery; Evaluate labor progress with cervical exams, internal placement of monitors such as scalp electrodes, internal pressure catheters, fetal pulse oximeters. Obtaining cord blood samples in the birthing and operating rooms. Assessing blood pressures, urine results, and indications for pre-eclampsia. IV starts. Drawing, obtaining and processing lab specimens. Labor progress coaching thru delivery phase. Maintaining sterile technique. Documentation in EPIC and OB Tracevue formats
  • Grant and Industry funded studies in pediatrics, inpatient and outpatient recruitment.
  • NIH and Industry funded clinical trials are under IRB compliance at all times.
  • As a research nurse, responsibility includes:
  • Legal consent process following NIH guidelines.
  • Routine assessments for compliance and any complications that arise.
  • Routine research medication administration.
  • Scheduling with related necessary various departments.
