I served as the founding medical director of the largest adult HIV clinic in San Diego County. In that capacity, I cared for many patients with co-occurring HIV, substance use disorders, and mental health challenges. Following retirement from full-time faculty status at the University of California San Diego, I have continued to teach medical students and residents while contributing to research. I have co-authored 24 peer-reviewed publications dealing with the syndemics of HIV and substance use disorders. Currently, I am pursuing a Master of Arts degree from the Hazelden Betty Ford Graduate School of Addiction Studies to augment my mental health and addiction counseling skills, with a particular focus on HIV-infected and LGBTQ clients.
