Since I have always been interested in activities that offer opportunities for helping people, I shadowed and volunteered at Fox Chase Cancer Center, Temple University Hospital, and University of Pennsylvania Hospital. The purpose of this activity was to gain experience working in a health environment. I really enjoyed that even with my limited knowledge I was able to make a difference in the daily routine of the department. In my opinion, shadowing and volunteering are the best extracurricular activities in which a pre-medical student can engage. I can emphatically state that one of the major reasons why I want to be a doctor is due to my shadowing and volunteering experience.
While shadowing Dr. Serban Constantinescu in Nephrology, Kidney Transplant, and Pancreas Transplant, I observed how he interacted with his patients and listened to the types of questions he asked them that would be relevant to his diagnoses.
Dr. Serban has taught me much about how to interact with patient in a very professional yet personal level to make them feel comfortable as much as possible in order to have an excellent patient-doctor relationship.
Work with greeters at front door to take contact information and escort patients to destinations within the hospital.
