  • Assist the nursing staff in the Observation Care area by cleaning rooms, running supplies to the ER crash cart and other areas within Observation Care, send blood samples to the laboratory, and take vitals on patients. Assist the nurses with tasks as needed. Since joining the ER as a volunteer, I have gotten an insider-perspective into what it is like working in an ER. I have also learned how to take vitals, and which vital signs to watch for.

  • I had the privilege of shadowing Dr. David Woolsey, Dr. Patricia Panakos, Dr. Michael Roberds, Dr. Carrie Walsh, Dr. Kelly Medwid, and Dr. Matthew Pyle over a course of two weeks. With this shadowing experience, I mainly focused on trying to understand the flow of an ER in a Level I trauma center.

Epstein, MD, FACS; trauma surgeon Paul Beery II, MD; and general cardiologist Shane Matheny, DO; and got an insider's perspective about how an OR functions, as well as surgical operations, like: below-knee amputation, varicose phlebectomy, and fistula placement. Witnessed trauma bay operations, including treatment for pelvic fracture, and spleen rupture, as well as intensive care unit rounds. Witnessed various cardiology procedures including cardiac catheterization, TAVR procedures, cardiac ablation, transesophageal echocardiogram/cardioversion, change of pacemaker generator/pacemaker placement.
