Work History

Ferry Mate

Island Head
Hilton Head Island, South Carolina
05.2025 - Current

As a Ferry Mate (sometimes called First Mate on larger vessels), my day was all about keeping things safe, smooth, and on schedule while working closely with the captain and deck crew. Ferries run on tight timetables with lots of passenger and vehicle traffic, so the role mixes navigation, supervision, hands-on deck work, customer service, and a fair bit of cleaning/maintenance—especially on shorter routes or smaller passenger ferries.

Pre-departure prep (30–60 minutes before sailing):

  • I'd arrive and do a full walk-around inspection of the vessel: check fuel/oil levels, fluid tops, engine start-up (if needed), navigation equipment (radar, GPS, VHF radio), lights, horns, and safety gear like life jackets, fire extinguishers, and lifeboats.
  • Verify the vessel was clean and ready—wipe down railings if salty overnight, check heads (toilets) were stocked and functional.
  • Coordinated with captain on daily schedule, weather conditions, tide/current info, and special notes to ensure smooth operations.

Loading and departure:

  • Supervise the deckhands in lowering/raising ramps or gangways.
  • Direct vehicles onto the car deck—wave them in safely, ensure they're secured with chains or blocks to prevent shifting during the crossing, and keep lanes clear.
  • Assisted passengers boarding by greeting them, helping with luggage/strollers/wheelchairs, answering questions, and ensuring safe seating.
  • Once loaded, I'd often stand at the ramp/transition point to prevent accidents as we cast off lines and pull away from the dock.

Underway (during the crossing):

  • Stood navigational watch, steering the helm and monitoring radar, electronics, and deck log for position and conditions.
  • Patrol the passenger areas to check on comfort and safety: help seasick folks, ensure kids weren't climbing rails, respond to any needs (lost items, first aid basics).
  • Monitored the deck crew and intervened to fix any issues, such as loose lines or minor equipment problems.

Arrival and unloading:

  • Assist with docking: handle lines/mooring, supervise ramp deployment.
  • Direct vehicles off safely—first foot passengers, then cars/trucks in an orderly way.
  • Help passengers disembark, ensuring no one left belongings behind.
  • Quick clean-up sweep: pick up trash, sweep decks, reset for the return trip.

End of operations / post-sailing:

  • Secure the vessel: tie up properly, shut down systems if done for the day, perform shutdown checks.
  • Do final cleaning/janitorial tasks: pump heads if needed, clean cabins, empty bins.
  • Logged issues, incidents, and repair requests for maintenance team to facilitate timely resolutions.
  • If it was my last run, hand over to the relief crew or captain.

Front Service Clerk

Publix
Bluffton, South Carolina
07.2022 - 05.2025

As a Publix Cashier (often starting as or cross-trained with Front Service Clerk duties), my shifts were all about delivering that signature Publix "where shopping is a pleasure" experience—friendly, efficient, and super customer-focused. Publix emphasizes premier service, so everything revolved around making customers feel welcomed and valued while keeping the front end running smoothly. Shifts could be part-time or full-time, often including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays, with rotations between cashiering and front service tasks.

  • Stock bags at my register (paper, plastic, reusable), wipe down the belt, scanner, and register area to keep it spotless.
  • Check for any notes from previous shifts, like price overrides or promotions.
  • If assigned front service first, help gather carts from the lot or restock bag stations.

During peak hours – mainly cashiering:

  • Greet every customer with a big smile: "Hi, how are you today?" or "Welcome to Publix!" while making eye contact.
  • Scan items efficiently—beep, beep—using the handheld scanner for produce, weighing fruits/veggies, looking up PLU codes quickly.
  • Bag groceries thoughtfully: separate cold/frozen items, fragile stuff like bread/eggs on top, heavy items at the bottom, double-bag when needed. (Publix trains you on proper bagging technique to avoid squished produce or broken eggs!)
  • Process payments accurately: cash (count change back), credit/debit cards, checks (rare now), EBT/SNAP, coupons, gift cards, or mobile pay.
  • Handle transactions smoothly—offer rainchecks for out-of-stock sale items, apply discounts, answer questions about prices or products.
  • Stay alert for issues like price mismatches (quickly call for a manager override) or voided items.

Switching to Front Service Clerk tasks (very common—many shifts split time):

  • Jump in as a bagger when lines get long: help bag at adjacent registers, ensuring fast, neat packing.
  • Provide carryout service: push full carts to customers' cars in the parking lot, unload bags into trunks (or back seats for SUVs), and return the cart.
  • Retrieve stray shopping carts from the lot and corrals—especially after busy times or in bad weather—to keep the lot tidy.
  • Assist customers: walk them to find an item ("The cereal is aisle 7, right next to the oatmeal!"), help lift heavy items, or direct them to other departments.
  • Restock plastic/paper bags at registers and front end, sweep up spills, pick up trash, and help with minor cleaning (wiping spills, straightening impulse buys).

Throughout the shift:

  • Managed multitasking by engaging customers about recipes or deals, monitoring for safety, and performing quick clean-ups.
  • Maintained friendly and positive demeanor during rushes, ensuring customers felt welcomed and valued.
  • If slow, help stock nearby displays, face products, or assist in other areas (like helping a deli clerk if needed).

End of shift / closing duties:

  • Count down my till at the end (or when relieved), balance cash/credit/coins, prepare drop if over a certain amount.
  • Clean the register area thoroughly: wipe everything, empty trash, restock bags.
  • Executed closing tasks, including gathering final carts, sweeping front end, and assisting with go-backs to keep store organized.
  • Clock out and head home, often feeling good about the interactions—customers frequently complimented the service!

The role was fast-paced and physical (standing all day, lifting bags/carts), but rewarding—building rapport with regulars, helping families with big hauls, and being part of a team that prided itself on going the extra mile. Many cashiers start here and move up to customer service desk, management, or other departments. It taught me a ton about customer service, multitasking, and staying upbeat under pressure.
