Animal Behavior College Certified Dog Trainer
The Pamlico Correctional Institution New Leash on Life Program (NLOL) began in 2012 as a collaboration between the state prison, Pamlico Animal Welfare Society and several local animal shelters and rescue organizations. The program paired incarcerated men with 4-6 dogs to train, socialize and work with for a two month period. At the end of the period, a graduation ceremony was held where the dogs were officially handed over to their new owners (new owners were previously screened and had paid an adoption fee).
The program helped the men with building confidence, having a sense of responsibility, and learning to new skills. It was definitely a win-win for all involved.
I was the Volunteer trainer for the program from 2012-2020. When the program begin, I put together the training manual which covered how to teach basic cues, problem solving , and the care of newly rescued canines. Throughout the years, the inmate trainers learned first aid, advanced training skills and prep skills for training service dogs. They were given a well-rounded education in the hopes they were interested and able to use the skills upon release.
In 2019, I received the county Volunteer of the Year Award for my eight years of work with this rewarding program. At this time, NLOL had rescued , trained and adopted out well over 200 formerly homeless dogs.
