Conduct dockside and on-the-water angler surveys to gather information from recreational fishermen, and collect biological data from marine fish species.
Coordinate with co-workers in the monthly collection of marine vertebrate and invertebrate specimens aboard vessels utilizing trawl, seine, and gill nets to meet program goals of fishery-independent projects.
Post fishery data collection, including but not limited to otolith extraction, sexing, weighing, measuring, and identifying marine vertebrates and invertebrates.
Recurrent mapping of marine habitats using side-scan sonar.
Quantification, biological data collection, and tagging of reef fish aboard charter vessels during Reef Fish At-Sea sampling trips; predation, barotrauma, and release methods were also recorded.
Dockside collection of hard parts, length, and weight data of marine finfish species from recreational anglers.
QA/QC of all hard parts collected from marine finfish species and entered data into the Gulf Fisheries Information Network database.
Collection and identification of marine vertebrates and invertebrates using otter trawls for educational public outreach events.
Participate in outreach events by caring for marine vertebrates and invertebrates, setting up recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), interacting with the public to provide information about marine species and conservation efforts supported through the Alabama Marine Resources Division.
Coordination and distribution of yearly MRD informational tide calendar.
Assistance with daily operation of marine fish hatchery and rearing of fish in the Claude Peteet Mariculture Center.
Deployment of remote camera monitoring equipment to observes turtle nests, and review of archived videos following programmatic guidelines; data from video review included in MRD’s Southeast Regional Sea Turtle poster presentation.
Data entry and QA/QC of ESA and MMPA enforcement patrol activity associated with monitoring sea turtle and marine mammal interactions.
Participated in daily coordination with Share the Beach team leaders during Alabama’s sea turtle nesting season to ensure handling, monitoring, and management of nests were in compliance with federal permits; I was responsible for approving/denying nest relocations, supervising daily check-ins, data entry, and answering related questions.
QA/QC of sea turtle nesting and excavation data sheets collected during Alabama's sea turtle nesting season.
Inspection of artificial reef materials and issuance of Artificial Reef Permits to applicants who comply with Alabama’s artificial reef protocols.
Participation in NOAA SEAMAP groundfish/shrimp trawl surveys of the Gulf of Mexico: Ground trawl surveys require the use a 42-ft semi-balloon trawl towed on the bottom; sorting the catch by species, entering the weights and lengths using the electronic data collection system, and taking a variety of wet lab samples for selected species.
QA/QC of vertebrate and invertebrate species collected during SEAMAP groundfish/shrimp trawl surveys.
Routine maintenance of vehicles, facilities, vessels, equipment, and boat ramps.
