This is the entry level position for Con Edison field employees. Those in this position are partnered with a Mechanic A or Cable Splicer and will learn the basics of Con Edison's electrical and construction practices . The job of a GUW is to assist the Mechanic A or Cable Splicer during the course of the work being performed but is not yet qualified to work on live utilities. This position is the equivalent to an apprenticeship under master tradesman.
This is the intermediate title earned after an employee at the General Utility Worker level displays the required level of proficiency and knowledge need to work directly with the utility or utilities his/her group manages and passes a promotional exam. At this level employees are given more independence and are allowed minor tasks to complete on their own. The employees who hold this position are expected to display a intermediate level of proficiency when performing work on the utility their group/ department manages. This position is equivalent to a journeyman level tradesman.
A lead position given to those who have completed all necessary training in order to perform work without the supervision of another lead Mechanic. The Mechanic A leads his or her own crew and manages their own jobs. The Mechanic A position is equivalent to that of a master tradesman. Mechanic A will lead projects ranging from manhole inspections of high voltage electrical cable as well as fiber optic cable for safety prior to digging near or entering the structures to the installation of new electrical services to customers.
