In my current role as Communications Director for the Department of Health and Health Facilties, I have been able to build on the strong relationships I developed as a reporter, working closely with journalists across the state to communicate key public health messages and ensure timely, accurate coverage of health issues. This network has proven invaluable in advancing the department’s initiatives, such as the West Virginia Healthy Habits Schools Contest, which generated significant media attention and helped engage communities in promoting healthier lifestyles for children. Additionally, my experience in crisis communications and strategic messaging will be essential in supporting your administration’s emerging challenges.

With more than 11 years of experience in investigative journalism, I have consistently demonstrated an ability to uncover and report on critical issues that others have overlooked. My reporting on the regional jail system, for instance, revealed systemic flaws that led to meaningful reforms and legislative change. I have a strong ability to turn over the big rocks and tackle complex stories that involve in-depth research, investigative reporting, and a commitment to holding those in power accountable. My recognition includes multiple prestigious awards, such as the Best Investigative Reporter awards from both the Associated Press and the West Virginia Association for Justice in 2023. I also received honors for breaking news coverage, including a West Virginia Broadcaster’s Association award for my investigation into the Beckley VAMC Acupuncture program in 2021. Additionally, my ability to communicate complex issues through multiple platforms—television, social media, and online—ensures that important stories reach the public with clarity and impact.

• Taught 7th grade English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Religious Education at the Primary School in Zomba, Malawi, Central Africa through a volunteer program sponsored by Blacksburg Presbyterian Church in Blacksburg, Virginia
