Work History

Underwater Boat Cleaner

Man Overboard Marine Repair and Cleaning
Charleston, SC
06.2023 - 08.2023
  • As the river that runs through Charleston is mud and freshwater, this base creates a lot of algae growth on boats. Therefore, they need to be cleaned twice a month. The owner of Man Overboard hired me to put on scuba gear and dive underneath the ship to scrape and clean off all the growth and dirt buildup. Furthermore, if an individual needs an underwater repair, such as specific plugs replaced or other work, such as filters in ponds changed out, Man Overboard could have hired me to do so. This job required a scuba diving license and much resilience to overcome all the bugs and algae crawling. Also, the ability to focus while alligators, dolphins, and possibly sharks watch your work can be jarring, especially with the small amount of visibility. The intense hard work was worth the ability to stay out of the Charleston sun.

Front Desk Receptionist

K9 Pet Resorts
Malvern, PA
10.2022 - 03.2023
  • At a dog daycare, being around a bunch of dogs may seem fun and enjoyable. It can be, but there is a risk associated with certain dogs; you have to be trained to handle the dogs in a manner that will keep everyone calm—also, learning to reprimand the dogs that act out while controlling the lot of them not to create a situation. Furthermore, knowing how to talk appropriately to customers in person and over the phone teaches patience and simple over-the-phone communication, which many can be afraid to try and tackle. Also, individuals who own pets can be pretentious at times, so learning that the customer is always right when they are not is another test of maturity.

Server

Amis Trattoria
Devon, PA
06.2022 - 08.2022
  • I was a server at an Urban Outfitters-owned Italian restaurant for this position. Learning to stay focused and look happy at work while it seems everything is happening at once and nobody is doing anything about it is a skill only restaurant work can teach. The chemistry from working with the most opposite groups of people, from the servers, chefs, bartenders, and managers, creates a new outlook on efficiency and learning to overcome specific cultural differences. Learning to memorize the menu, the wine pairings, and the education of restaurant work helped me build mature social skills. Furthermore, the restaurant hosted after-parties for weddings where you were entrusted to entertain guests.

Gap Year

  • For my gap year program, I joined a school program where I took 3 AP-level classes, including sailing on a Norwegian Tall Ship around the world for ten months. This experience gave me an eye-opening experience in the world, meeting many different cultures. While learning the life of tall ship sailors and what it is like to travel traditionally. Aboard, I was able to completely get out of my comfort zone, doing nothing like I have ever done throughout my entire life on every level. We were sleeping in hammocks, climbing the rigging to prevent sails from ripping, living in isolation with only 80 others on a 65-meter ship. I had adapted and formed myself into a person I truly enjoyed—furthermore, learning the basics and not-so-basic skills of sailing, from knot tying to wire splicing to even welding. The skills I have learned from being isolated from the world are something I would never give up for the rest of my life. It had created a whole new love I never thought I had.
