During school year 2021 to 2022, I participated in an immersive study abroad program focused on tropical ecology with the School for International Training in Panama. During the program, I was responsible for implementing various biological field techniques in diverse environments, including the rain forests of El Valle de Anton and the coral reefs of Guna Yala. I conducted research and data collection to assess the biodiversity and ecological dynamics of these unique ecosystems and had to develop a deep understanding of tropical ecosystems, including their interdependent relationships and the challenges they face in terms of conservation and sustainability. During our time, I enhanced my problem-solving abilities by overcoming challenges associated with fieldwork in remote locations. The experience required adaptability, resilience, working well in teams, navigating unfamiliar environments, and collaborating effectively with individuals from very diverse backgrounds. This experience provided an invaluable opportunity to gain practical knowledge in tropical ecology, conduct scientific research, and develop cross-cultural competencies.
