  • SMEC-MWH JV was awarded the engineering services contract for Updating the Feasibility Study, Detail Engineering Design (preparation of DPR) including updating Hydrological Studies, geotechnical investigations, environmental and social impact assessment studies and preparation of full set of EPC Tender Documents for the project
  • The proposed Nalgad HPP constitutes of a 248m high storage concrete arch dam along with a headrace tunnel of over 9 km length providing a maximum gross head of over 700m
  • The proposed project has an underground power station designed for 4 sets of Pelton turbines of 104.25 MW each
  • The annual generation is expected to be 1232 GWh
  • The electricity generated in the power station will be evacuated to the Nepal National Grid by a 112 km long 400 kV double circuit transmission line
  • The estimated cost (2021) of the project was USD 1.42 Billion.

Project Coordinator / Team Leader

SMEC International Pty Ltd, MWH JV
09.2020 - 01.2022

  • It was an engineering services contract awarded through international competitive bidding and the contract amount was over USD 10 million
  • Addressing Client’s comments on the draft DPR, Draft Detail Design Report, Draft Tender Documents and Draft ESIA report
  • A large number of comments were served by the Client on Hydrology report especially on the adopted value of mean annual flow, the average monthly flow and the probable maximum flood and flood impact assessment
  • Due to lack of long term measured meteorological and hydrological data of the river the data from similar catchment river had been transformed
  • Five new meteorological stations were established and using the three years measured data from these stations HEC-HMS model was applied to determine mean annual flow and the average monthly flow
  • The PMF was also determined using HE-
  • HMS model
  • Carried out hydrological analysis and physical hydraulic modelling/design of dam and associated hydraulic structures, drainage design and integrated water management study
  • Carried out design of site access roads and bridges with properly designed drainage facilities
  • HECRAS software was used to determine level of flood water and sufficient clearance to pass design flood
  • Organising Client Consultant meetings; preparing agenda for discussion and recording the minutes of the meeting and circulating to concerned people
  • Follow-up the subject specialist to undertake actions decided in the meeting to ensure submission deadline are met
  • Organise periodical Project coordination meeting with the JV partners; prepare progress reports, record the minutes of meeting and implement the decisions made in the meeting
  • Prepare Power Point Presentation and present to the line Ministries and the Client’s Office
  • Coordination with the field investigation sub-contractors including Rock Mechanics Test (RMT) sub- contractor, water quality and sediment study sub-contractor, bridge and access road construction sub- contractor etc
  • A 320m long test tunnel was excavated to reach the proposed underground powerhouse location and 4 number of test adits, 2 on either bank of the river at the dam location were excavated at different elevations to carry out the Direct Shear Test (DST) and Plate Jacking Tests (PJT)
  • Each of the dam site test adits were 60m long
  • Coordinating the physical hydraulic model test of dam, intake and spillway structures
  • Timely preparation of contractual deliverables and ensure their quality & submission deadlines
  • Participate in the technical meeting with the Client’s Panel of Experts (POE) and the Review Consultant and resolve the issues brought in discussion
  • In this respect the POE had raised serious concerns about the stability of proposed underground power station due to the presence of alternative bands of inferior quality mudstone in-between sandstone layers
  • Hydro-fracturing Test (HFT) and Plate Jacking
  • Tests (PJT) were carried out to optimize the proposed UG Powerhouse location
  • From the results of the
  • HFT the direction of the major principal stresses of the rock was found out
  • While from the result of PJT the deformability index of the rock mass was determined
  • The proposed Powerhouse location was shifted to better/safer location avoiding the weaker mudstone band
  • Apply technical expertise through design and field work teams by engaging and directing works
  • Supporting drafting team with technical information and preparing design drawings and reports
  • Support the development and improvement of RMT procedures, standards, and guidelines
  • Planning and prioritising assigned tasks to ensure timely completion and delivery of quality output
