In 1991 I was asked to help The Community Homes For Children close down the group homes and move in to a shared living model. The Team placed over 60 people in private home individually in the Western Massachusetts area. This agency, later named, Nonotuck Resource Associates expanded this model across the Commonwealth.
I was The Lead in The Annual Shared Living Conference hosted by Nonotuck Resource Associates. I lead a Team of people to plan, choose the venue, the topics, the Key Note Speaker, food and special needs.
Group homes can only be as good as the people who run them. This being said there are many people, interpersonal issues, nutritional, medical inconsistencies in running a multi shift program. The Community Homes For Children with the support of the Northampton Regional Office interviewed private citizens and matched them with individuals that we thought may be able to live together. My history with some of my clients from Belchertown to a private home was a true journey of joy and enlightenment. These people blossomed!!! Many people had skills we never knew.
