- I started out as an assembler on the assembly line and laminated windshields, used tools to finish the product, and packed the product for shipment. This assembly job consisted of placing a laminate piece of plastic in between two pieces of tempered glass, visually inspecting it for defects as well as using a metric scale for additional inspection, such as paint coverage, defect size, and shape to see if it fit customer specifications. The lamination process was finished by heating the glass up in two separate ovens, and squeezing the air pockets out of it with a hydraulic roll system. As a CVS operator, I was in charge of making the lamination for the windshields, and had to operate the machines, use accurate measuring to make sure the product was made correctly, lift, use cranes, hoists, lifts and operate a forklift. The plastic lamination came in rolls that were hundreds of feet long and had to be wound through a series of metal rolls and heated rolls shaped like cones. This machine bent the plastic sheeting to the desired shape at a steady speed by heating and turning the plastic. When properly heated, the plastic then passed through a roll that was 32 degrees Fahrenheit or lower to cool it off. Once it finished this process, an automatic cutting press machine would cut it to the specified length that I entered into the computer, and the final product was ready for glass lamination. I had to use forklifts and cranes to manipulate the rolls, computer programs to put in the desired numbers and specifications, and I had to use a micrometer, metric scale, standard Imperial measurements, and an organizing system to store the plastic until it was ready for use. My final job there before the plant closed was as a Quality Inspector. It was my job to make sure that the product was meeting customer demands, and if it did not, to correct the problem and make it right for final shipment. In this job, I had to visually inspect the raw glass for defects before lamination was done, using micrometers, metric scales, and standard Imperial measurements to insure that the product met customer demands. If the product was not meeting the demands of the customer, the defective windshields were either discarded, or repaired if possible.
