RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Level II Shift Sergeant will be responsible for:

Escorting inmates in their assigned area.

Assisting in relieving officers for meals as directed by the Shift Supervisor or

Unit Sergeant.

Searching inmates and their property in housing units, entering or leaving restricted areas on a random basis. Responsible for ensuring staff conduct proper and thorough searches of inmates and institutional areas.

Supervising inmates during activities, appointments, meals, and special work assignments.

Escorting inmates to and from restricted areas, and maintaining building security.

Reporting all breaches of security, discrepancies, or problems to the Unit Sergeant or Shift Supervisor immediately.

Completing and turning in Security/Inspection forms as assigned.

Shall conduct security inspections of locks, windows, gates, fences, bars, doors, and door frames, during each tour of duty. The inspection will not only be visibly ensuring that the devices are secure, but physically pushing or pulling on it to ensure that it is not only closed, but secured as well. Any discrepancies discovered during the inspections shall be reported to the Shift Supervisor and corrected immediately.

Conducting area searches and inspections.

Reporting safety and sanitation problems and/or taking corrective action.

Assisting in monitoring activities and movement in his/her assigned area.

Accountability of out counts.

Obtaining urine samples upon directive of Shift Supervisor.

DUTIES

The Level II Shift Sergeant will ensure inmates adhere to institutional rules and regulations.

The Level II Shift Sergeant will learn the identity of inmates, communicate with inmates, learn their friends or associates, and observe their behavior in order to be aware of the "pulse" of the institution.

The Level II Shift Sergeant will be quick and alert to respond to requests of assistance.

Prior to assuming a post, the relieving officer will inspect all equipment and report any discrepancies to the shift supervisor.

Responsible for patrolling all areas of the building and compound. Responsible for ensuring that all inmates adhere to institutional rules and regulations.

Responsible for monitoring and supervising inmates during activities in library, gym, chapel, medication or sick call, dorms, laundry, food service, outside activities (yard), work details, etc.

Responsible for searching inmates and their property in assigned dorms, or when entering or leaving restricted areas on random basis.

Responsible for completing accountability forms and submitting them to the Shift Supervisor.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES

To provide for the safety and security of the Institution.

Ensure that Directives, Post Orders and CNMCF/NMCD Policies and Procedures are carried out on a continual basis.

Post orders are not designated to cover every event that may occur. For items not specifically covered in the Post Orders, refer to CNMCF/NMCD Policies and Procedures.

DUTIES

It is essential that the officer assuming the post recognizes the security restrictions, special needs, and status of the inmates assigned to the Unit. The "Assuming the Post" section shall apply to all officers whether at the initial tour of duty, at shift change, or after any break in operation.

The officer being relieved will give a verbal briefing. This briefing will include the number of inmates assigned, any special watches, any special or major incidents that have occurred, any no contact requirements, any security restrictions, and any observations of unusual conduct.

The relieving officer will review the information recorded on the Unit assignment board to ensure that is corresponds with the log entries and the verbal briefing. Any special medical concerns, security concerns, or other important concerns will also be reviewed for inclusion on the assignment board.

The LTCU Officer will begin a daily log. All counts, movement, staff and special visits, incidents, and any other pertinent information will be logged in the daily log. Log sheets will not be used for scratch pads or other purposes, and all completed logs will be submitted to the Shift Supervisor at the end of each shift

Log sheets should only be used for the intended purpose. Notes, drawings, and other types of doodling are prohibited.

Intake to the Long Term Care Unit

Contact the CNMCF Master Control Center, and verify the authorization for acceptance of the inmate.

Inform CNMCF Master Control Center of the new inmate/patient room assignment, and the new LTCU count.

Request a copy of the transport order and picture of the inmate from the transporting officer, which includes the medical file, etc. will then be turned over to Shift Supervisor. The picture should be placed on the assignment board, and the transport order should be placed on the assignment of the MHTC/LTCU.

The assignment board should be updated to reflect:

Inmate/Patient Name

Inmate/Patient Number

Inmate/Patient Room and Bed Assignment

Date and Time of Admission

Facility of Transfer

Special Medical or Security Concerns

Welfare checks and General Orders

LTCU Control Center Officer will call Tower 1 every hour to report welfare check. This welfare check will be conducted by telephone, and recorded in the LTCU Control Officer's post log.

The Unit Manager/Shift Supervisor will be notified immediately if the person assigned to this post knows of any reason that would prevent the officer from being alert and attentive to the duties of the post, including but not limited to physical and mental conditions.

Under no circumstance shall any assigned officer leave the LTCU without being properly relieved, or without being authorized by the LTCU Sergeant.

All LTCU inmate/patient rooms shall remain locked, at all times, whether occupied by an inmate/patient or not.

The LTCU Officer will ensure that all unusual noises and inmate behavior is investigated, and makes the appropriate notation in the post log.

The LTCU Officer should know how many inmates are assigned to the Unit, where they are assigned, and where they are at any given time.

The LTCU Officer should record and ensure that non-staff visitors entering the LTCU are on official business, maintain the proper visitor's clearance, and are under the appropriate escort.

The LTCU Control Center officer will ensure that no inmate/patient rooms are opened, unless the corridor door is secure.

Inmates/Patients will not be permitted in or around the nurse's station or officer's station. In addition, inmate are not allowed in any portion of the LTCU, outside of their assigned inmate/patients rooms, unless under escort

The LTCU Control Center officer will ensure that all the exit, and/or security doors remained secured. Doors should not be blocked open, left unlocked, or the locking devices or self-closures left unsecured.

The LTCU Control Center officer will ensure that no secondary or exit doors (outside doors, pharmacy door, etc.) are opened when inmate/patients are in the corridors, or in that particular area.
