As a Graduate Nurse, I entered the position at Shands Live Oak with the expectation of honing the nursing skills I acquired in clinical rotation. This was a small hospital, and the more complicated health needs were transferred out of our care to larger hospitals. I did gain valuable experience in time management, working with other staff, and charting efficiently. I did not, however gain experience in more complicated procedures. I worked there approximately five months, and then accepted a position at Shands UF, Unit 74.

The experience I gained in the two years working on this unit was invaluable. I became very familiar with various routes of medication administration. Oral, subcutaneous, IM, and IV medications, including blood products, antibiotics, and replacement fluids. I have inserted and / or maintained care of lines. Foley catheters, NG tubes, tracheostomies, peripheral and central lines. I have participated in SWATS and Codes. I have learned to recognize changes in status to alert physician to get new orders to prevent possible SWATS or codes.

As a LMT, I would develop a plan of care by evaluating acute and chronic symptoms, often coordinating with suggestions from D.C

I would use a combination of deep tissue, effleurage, and trigger point therapy to relieve pain and stress.

I would also guide patients through stretches during sessions and recommeded stretches to do at home to maintain progress.

These actions were all charted as SOAP notes and were evaluated, approved, and signed off by the Chiropractor.

I became very comfortable with the process of guided questions and history to formulate the best plan of care.
