I grew up with a family of doctors, raised by one. Like many physicians, I was frustrated on behalf of my patients with the ineffectiveness of such a critical system. A few influential figures and moments shaped my life. My father culled his skills in ENT to perform highly sought surgical procedures and yet advised a fellow church member on treating her cold. My mentors, both women, at the top of their field in ophthalmology and yet pioneering forward. Dr. Grosvenor drew me into ophthalmology as an eager medical student and subsequent physician in the Ophthalmology Department in Barbados - Dr. Grajewski, who empowered and enlightened me to realize that doctors can be and do so much more outside of their scope. I care deeply for my patients, with each success cementing my fervor to help and each loss reminding me how vulnerable we are and the privilege I was given to instrument change in their lives.
At some point, it gets tiring explaining to patients unfortunate circumstances when you know it could have been prevented. I advocate strongly for my patients, yet more is needed; systemic change requires dynamic problem-solving and collaboration. I left Barbados, a population of 275,000, to move to the most populated and diverse cities in the US, such as New York. I was in a top ophthalmology program; I felt like I had finally made it. At no fault of any individual, the healthcare system is flawed but manifests in different ways, and this chapter showcased this recurring theme. I always knew I wanted to implement change, but that feeling became direr as my experience grew. I turned to my mentor, a world-renowned trailblazer, for support and advice - she emphasized - you are so much more.
