Projects

Senior Design - Aerodynamics and Stability

  • Optimized fin design to be able to perform within Mach 1 range and reach a minimum altitude of 3,000 feet, Performed thermo analysis (using ANSYS) against varying altitudes to conduct a trade study and determine optimal material for fin manufacturing,
  • Designed 3D drawings of the fins using SolidWorks to calculate the best position the fins should be mounted on the fuselage and optimized them for the best aerodynamics during optimal flight,
  • Created trapezoidal fins that allowed better airflow and stability during flight and the finished design of the fin was more cost efficient compared to alternative fins that required more materials to manufacture,
  • Conducted a trade study between different fin materials to be purchased from different vendors while staying within a $3,000 dollar budget.
  • Successfully executed maintaining our cost of materials under the given budget by 10% by utilizing the equipment provided and assembling it by hand rather than having it manufactured by an outside third party
