Over the past year and a half, I’ve worked as a Patient Care Technician, where I provided direct care to patients, assisting with daily activities and ensuring their comfort and well-being. In addition to my work as a Patient Care Tech, I’ve also served as a Safety Companion, where I helped ensure patient safety and comfort in various healthcare settings. In my role as a Patient Care Technician, I was responsible for assisting patients with basic needs, including monitoring vital signs, helping with mobility, and offering emotional support. My time as a Safety Companion involved observing patients to prevent falls, offering reassurance, and alerting healthcare staff when necessary. A Patient Care Technician (PCT) is a healthcare worker who supports nurses and doctors by providing basic patient care. They help with tasks like checking vital signs, assisting with bathing and feeding, moving patients, and ensuring comfort. PCTs also monitor patients and report any changes to the medical team, helping keep care safe and efficient.
A safety companion is a person that supports someone’s safety in situations where there may be risk. They help by staying nearby or connected, keeping an eye on the situation, and stepping in or getting help if something goes wrong.
As a Safety Companion, I played a key role in ensuring the safety of high-risk patients. I monitored patients around the clock, effectively preventing falls and minimizing the risk of injury. Through my proactive communication with nursing staff, I helped ensure a timely response to patient needs, resulting in a reduction in fall incidents within my shift.
In my role as a Patient Care Technician, I assisted patients with daily activities, vital sign monitoring, and mobility support. During my training, I successfully performed over 50 blood draws, ensuring patient comfort and adhering to safety protocols. My ability to perform precise blood draws was recognized by my instructors, and I received positive feedback for my bedside manner and technical skill.
As part of a healthcare team, I collaborated with nurses, doctors, and other medical professionals to ensure that patient care was coordinated effectively.
