Masters Radio is an entrepreneurial radio and streaming service featuring artists who are “Masters” – Those popular from 1955 to 2002 (Masters Period) and have no place to debut new music. Lower music sales mean artists are giving away their music. Research shows that over 3000+ artists have a large amount of music not played by the internet, Satellite, or Terrestrial radio. Many artists are still performing and touring. More than 80% of these researched artists have new or unreleased music. Listeners have no direct venue to listen to this music, and many are unaware that this new music even exists. Terrestrial radio stations rarely play new music from older artists. Stations tend to play music from larger record labels, not independent or individual artists. Satellite and internet radio rarely recognize or play music in this category. Amazon, Apple iTunes, Google, etc., will bury these songs and artists so they can showcase more popular, newer, and frequently played artists. Masters Radio is the alternative for this forgotten music.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Venue Marketing:
As a part of the broader marketing plan, select and execute virtual and in-person events, trade shows, and webinars to build brand visibility and engagement. Perform market analysis of upcoming events and match the target goals established for our brand. Leverage relationships and secure partnerships with key people and organizations, resulting in bookings for targeted events.
Accomplishments:
As VP of Investor Relations, I was an individual performer and a senior leadership team member reporting to the Chief Operating Officer. As the company was a start-up, we had anywhere from 4 to 10 full-time equivalents on board at any point in time. My primary focus was external, leveraging my previous experience and relationships to take the Masters Radio message to the marketplace to generate excitement and secure investment funds. Working with the senior leadership team we honed a succinct and engaging message to the market in a variety of mediums that conveyed the identity, the value and the return on investment from working with Masters, I presented an attractive financing package for investors to our team that was adopted. After a dedicated campaign to friendly contacts, $5M of new investment was generated in less than 4 weeks, a record for the company.
Creating a strategy around venues allows a company to get its brand and messaging out to specific target audiences while being specific at which events they participate in as they are not a concert promoter, Masters Radio chose The Rock and Roll for Children Benefit Concert and Auction done annually for the National Institute of Health's Children Inn, We were able to join the planning commission and partner with them gaining access to a host of new relationships commercially as well as within the music industry. Foghat headlined the concert, and our COO got to play onstage with the band. Money was raised for a great cause, and our brand was included in all the materials. Several new investors came out of this activity.
Enhancing Employee Productivity and Culture as well as building a high-performance leadership team: A key responsibility of a CEO is to set the organization's vision, tone, and culture. At CSR Incorporated, by creating an open and transparent environment and encouraging collaboration and open communication, the culture within the company began to shift. After bringing in some top talent in various roles, a high-performance team was created by ensuring all had a shared vision and defined roles and responsibilities. Communication was clear and respectful; all valued trust and respect; we set high goals with clear deadlines, held ourselves accountable, and participated in continuous learning activities. We saw employee productivity improve by 20% while building a highly inclusive, diversified, and engaged culture. Our happy employees created happy customers. Happy customers resulted in a higher level of profitable revenue. By implementing effective recruiting, onboarding, professional development, performance management, and retention practices, we created a skilled and passionate workforce about our mission. This culture of inclusion and engagement was crucial as we provided solutions that required innovative thinking and a deep understanding of the latest healthcare research and trends in the industry.
Overcoming Financial and Customer Challenges: One of my passions is fixing thorny business issues in which others do not want to be involved. I've had the opportunity to do this several times throughout my career. My first large challenge was at EDS on the Xerox account. Our leadership had negotiated a handshake agreement for Xerox to outsource their data center, telecommunications, and applications work to us. However, the scope was not clearly defined. Leadership changed on both sides of the aisle, and I was asked to come in as the Controller as the account had no idea of their true financial performance. The account was not organized in the traditional corporate structure, presenting some challenges. By creating an innovative financial reporting structure and auditing performance-to-date, we could present a true picture of the account's performance to leadership. Out of that discussion came a series of business issues that needed to be resolved within the corporation or with the customer. By acting as the communication liaison between all the parties, we could track and resolve most outstanding issues. At one point, the Presidents of EDS and Xerox had to sit down to negotiate, but it happened.
My next opportunity came as the Program Manager of a $7B, 10-year US Navy infrastructure implementation contract. Collaboration and influence issues were collected and brought for resolution using a similar investigation process. This involved senior US Navy personnel, our Government liaison office to the hill, internal senior leadership, and our Board of Directors. It required constant analysis, cross-functional collaboration of internal and external teams, constant communication, and many innovative problem-solving skills. But success was had.
After I left EDS, I could apply this talent to several small to medium-sized companies I was a part of. Sapient, ime Solutions, GTI Federal and CSR, Incorporated were all on a downward trajectory as I walked on board. By analyzing and understanding the root cause problems, devising a clear strategy and communicating it to all, defining objectives and roles, using sound program management techniques to manage delivery, encouraging creativity and innovation in the organization, and holding ourselves accountable, we were able to turn the tables positively for all these organizations leaving them in a far more positive position for success.
Strategic Partnerships and Customer Focus: My leadership roles have given me many opportunities to prepare and present to various C-suite customers and company executives, both internal and external, to the companies I belonged to. The topics have anything from financial results, risk analysis, new deal presentations, and operational updates, to name a few. This has given me a clear ability to think on my feet and communicate complex topics in a way that an audience can understand. Some examples are:
Building and maintaining relationships and being straightforward, direct, and true to your word is crucial for success. Growing an organization requires sales, and many clients buy because they trust the people selling to them. This approach has served me well in the companies I have led.
