Work History

Fish Biologist

NOAA Fisheries
04.2024 - 02.2025
  • Work with field scientists on a daily basis. I was responsible for receiving and verifying data collection methods on large data sets through a detailed quality control protocol.
  • Conducted interviews with the scientist who collected the data while deployed in the field.
  • Responsible for providing in-season support to the field scientists to answer questions of collection methods, regulatory components, and run queries in the database to ensure data was continually collected in unbiased manner so that is available for fisheries stock assessment.
  • Routinely worked with confidential data and compliance issues that are time sensitive. I was responsible for understanding applicable regulations for fisheries management and that compliance issues were documented and reported by the appropriate parties according to protocol.
  • An integral part of the office to maintain safety equipment and gear. I scheduled meetings and worked with higher level staff to work through sampling protocol decisions.

  • Collect data on species composition within a catch, size distribution and sex frequency among other biological data
  • Design randomized sampling schematics as outlined by National Marine Fisheries Service, that also needed to account for boat specific variables that could potentially introduce bias
  • Collect biological data, such as otoliths, sex frequency, and size ratios on targeted species, as well as vertebra samples on skates, and genetic samples for salmon species
  • Enter all the data into a database on a regular basis to submit to NMFS for in-season monitoring
  • Discuss data in a debriefing appointment to thoroughly check for errors

Setline Survey Specialist (Field)

International Pacific Halibut Commission
05.2018 - 09.2020
  • Make a trip plan with the captain to sample survey sites laid out on a 10 nautical mile grid pattern
  • Coordinate with the office and fish processing plant to set up an offload
  • ensure that gear is set to specific parameters to avoid data basis (i.e. test weight of randomly selected bait pieces, count hooks on deployment, verify depth)
  • assess all Pacific Halibut brought onboard for length, weight, hook injury and maturity if legal sized
  • collect otolith on randomly selected halibut
  • Tag randomly selected under-sized halibut
  • count and record seabirds at the end of hauling gear
