As the full-time Executive Officer reporting to union members and the International office, I maintain overall responsibility for supervising local union affairs on behalf of five properties and seven collective bargaining agreements representing nearly 1,000 members. As lead negotiator, I have experience ratifying both new and successor agreements, research and preparation of both economic and non-economic proposals for collective bargaining, grievances, and arbitration. I conduct Executive Board presentations, as well as presenting to the Board of Directors and giving media interviews when needed. I work to build relationships within the local and the agencies we represent, and my focus is on creative problem-solving. I sponsored a new Emergency Response Advocate program in 2024, pairing members who have experienced a serious emergency, accident or assault in the field with a union advocate to provide support. Served as coach operator, ensuring the safe operation of passenger busses across all routes within the system throughout Snohomish County, while maintaining a current CDL and DOT medical card. Duties were to collect fares as needed, assist riders, and adhere to bus schedules, traffic laws, and company protocols. Worked effectively out in the field under stressful conditions, including inclement weather, heavy traffic, accidents, and other emergencies, always ready to assist the community. Shift work including nights, weekends and holidays as required. Maintained excellent customer service, representing the agency to the public in a positive way and maintaining equal treatment for all, especially within diverse groups. Accident Free Million Mile Award recipient, served as a Safety Committee member and New Operator Route Trainer.
Conducted all day Shop Steward training on an annual basis, and maintained a list of 20-30 active shop stewards. Provided oversight for all disciplinary and grievance issues for five transit agencies and seven collective bargaining agreements, while maintaining all required timelines. Conducted monthly Grievance Review Committees. Researched and prepared termination and grievance cases, drawing information from employee files, agency policy, labor contracts, arbitration decisions, and applicable local, state and federal laws and regulations. Worked closely to successfully resolve issues outside the grievance process with agency HR Labor Relations, operations management, departmental staff and union labor attorneys. As a full-time executive officer, I was responsible for maintaining accurate and up-to-date records of all meetings and compiling assignments for officers and the executive board. I ensured proper record-keeping of bylaws, seniority lists, and other essential documents. Prepared, posted, and distributed meeting notices, agendas, and minutes for both internal and external meetings with attention to all required timelines. I provided oversight to ensure the local remained in good standing within the guidelines of the local by-laws and ATU International Constitution. Served as editor and publisher of the Union’s monthly newsletter. I also had a strong Safety and Health focus including break time, shift work, bus design, and wage and hour issues. Record keeping for all grievance, mediation, arbitration efforts as well as public and private sector contract negotiations. Website administrator, social media outreach, production of all communications going out of the union office.
As an Executive Board officer, my duties included supervising the work of the local union to ensure the work was completed efficiently. I assisted local officers in all representational matters, including grievances, arbitration, labor negotiations, and provided general guidance. I provided monthly reports to union officers covering areas such as grievance investigations and administration, new member orientations, safety, and membership welfare.
