Hairstylist

Beverwyk Independent Living /Beverwyk Skilled EBG
Guilderland, New York

  • I started at Beverwyk Independant Living facility in 2010 along with my love of doing hair for seniors.Just sitting and talking with the seniors and hearing their stories some happy some sad but their life journeys was so fulfilling to me.I met people in all walks of life and working on their hair and knowing I was a big part of their life and could make them feel good about themselves was so satisfying to me .And so I realized my true passion in my career was not only to be a stylist but a senior stylist to make them feel and look as amazing as they were and let them know they are important people in our lives .

  • At this point, I realize this is what I became a stylist for. The seniors looked so forward to seeing me walk through the front door. I also looked forward to being there, not only as their hairstylist but also learning to build relationships with them. I realized how much a little of your time goes a long way to just sit, talk, and listen to how they feel, what they need, and how grateful they were for their families and friends. It was no longer a job; it was an adventure every time I went there. Being their hairstylist was a pleasure; being their friend was an honor. When you love what you do, it is no longer just a job; it is a career! I found my career after all these years it was with my seniors .

This brings me to my last level of memory care I had to try—memory care. I have accomplished my goal in senior living communities by doing hair in all levels of senior care. I have overcome challenges of fear, anxiety, and confusion just by smiling and reassuring the residents that they are safe, and I am only there to help make them feel better and style their hair. We talk about whatever is on their minds, even if it is the same story over and over, or the same reassurance that they are safe with me. I enjoy seeing their smiles when they begin to recognize means we walk hand in hand through the units before we even enter the salon. I want them to know people love them for who they are, not only who they used to be.
