Cold Rolling Mill Operator (Cold Mill)

  • Set up and operate cold rolling mill to reduce and form aluminum into coils at customer specifications
  • Adjusts tonnage, balance, and contour before starting the coils using the work rolls and backup work rolls before starting a coil
  • Operate Prep station. Using a conveyor system a coil is moved into the prep area and off gauge metal is cut off to “prep” the coil for rolling
  • Operate Bridle. Move coil in with a conveyor system. Put mandrels in the coil, feed the sheet to the Mill Operator. Stop the coil at the proper time and take back scrap metal if necessary and pickup with the Monorail Crane.
  • Operate the exit. Coil moves out with a conveyor system. A steel band is wrapped around the coil and details are drawn on the coil. Some coils depending on the gauge and alloy have to be welded.
  • When something goes wrong with the mill mechanically or electrically assess what is wrong and try to find a solution before having to call maintenance
  • Perform work roll changes. Mechanically take the mill apart and use the roll change sled to move a new set of work rolls into the mill
  • Down-day maintenance. Go into the basement of the mill and change the filters. Replace worn/broken gaskets.
  • Monitor Coolant systems making sure that the proper amounts of additives have been mixed in to keep the coolant at the desired specifications
  • Checking metal samples for the metallic properties, make sure there are no defects for the customer.
  • Certifications: Class 01, 01A, 02, 03, 05, and 14 Mobile Equipment. R2 65-ton Crane, Monorail 8-ton Crane

  • I ran the meetings from 2022-2025. During the meeting I would take down notes, fill out charts on progress updates for Work Orders, contact maintenance for updates, assign tasks to other safety team members, send a summary of the meeting to Cold Mill Management & Process.
  • Examples of projects led by the safety team: Upgrading and adding Eye Wash Stations throughout the Cold Mill. Replacing the direct line eye wash stations with one time use saline bags, Repairing holes in the floor, Eliminating Pinch Points, Upgrading pedestrian walk way safety. Adding “stop and think” gates at cross sections, Getting PPE added to supply machines
