SUMMARY
  
Performs predetermined methods, operations, setups and prescribed specifications for inspections and tests required to substantiate conformance to drawings, specifications, and contract requirements. Conducts audits in all phases and stages during ship construction and/or repair.
  
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES

* 40%--Conduct inspections and tests documenting results required by inspection/testing instructions, test memoranda, work instructions, standard practices and engineering drawings.
* Technical knowledge in using various measuring devices.
* 30%--Conduct in-process inspections to ensure correct materials, proper fabrication and installation procedures are utilized during production process.
* 10%--Evaluate results from tests and inspections to determine acceptability.
* Has the authority to accept, reject or rework defective or malfunctioning units as per procedures.
* 15%--Research NASSCO/ Vendor drawings, contract/shipbuilding specifications, Regulatory requirements and technical manuals.
* 5%--Performs other tasks as assigned by the Chief Inspector, (Repair or New Construction). Required to certify as a competent person.
* Successful accomplishment of the assigned tasks will directly relate to NASSCOs ability to build ships in a cost effective manner, reducing rework and providing a quality product to the customer.
  
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

* Technical/Associate Degree, preferably Q.A./Marine-related or equivalent. Four to six (4  6) years of Quality Assurance inspection experience or equivalent trade related. 
* Knowledge of ship construction and repair procedures including welding, structural, machinery, electrical piping, ventilation and familiarity with various measuring instruments related to inspections. 
* Must be able to perform the essentials of the position including the ability to work at heights, and to go into tanks, voids and cofferdams to perform competent person duties. 
* Must be able to climb vertical ladders, work around moving machinery and perform tasks while using a sky climber, scissor lift and/or condor. 
* The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. 
* Computer literate with knowledge of NASSCO and mainframe computer. Good written and verbal communication skills. 
* Ability to read and understand blueprints, military standard/specifications, Regulatory Body Requirements, and Shipbuilding Specifications.
* Actively participates in implementing and monitoring continuous improvement initiatives to improve safety, improve quality, reduce cycle time, and reduce costs. 
  
Reports to Supervisor or Manager (Repair or New Construction). Maintains internal contacts with Purchasing, Warehousing, Safety, Production, and Engineering. Outside contacts include equipment vendors, customers, regulatory agencies and SupShip/MSC/Navy personnel. Must be a team player.
