I continued freelance editing after that, even bouncing my crying baby in a carrier while marking up books slated for publication. Detailed editing has been in my repertoire for 15+ years. (I feel old!) I deliver both content and copy editing in any style-especially CMH and APA-for fiction, nonfiction, and medical and other professional content. I'm a single mom with 3 beautiful girls. (I might be biased.) I built my freelance business to work around us. I have migraines that make regular hours impossible, and my girls have enough going on to keep us on our toes! I work odd hours from random locations, sometimes at my desk with a child draped across the back of my chair. It's beautiful! I started with 4 challenges in running the Starbucks and Target Cafe:
1) LEARN the roles without training. I learned the top performers and started working with them as a barista and food service team member. I read the employment manuals for Target, Starbucks, and Pizza Hut. (Yes, I reported to 3 bosses.) I am so glad that I learn quickly!
2) Address PERFORMANCE ISSUES with 2 team members. Our 2 best task performers displayed critically poor customer service. A few conversations and shared shifts clarified the reasons. The first employee did not understand her actions' impact and felt unsupported. We rearranged her schedule to balance personal needs, trained additional people so others shared the most challenging shifts, and talked about specific changes to improve how she was perceived. The entire store team (and customer surveys) saw the wonderful results! The second team member was jaded by a lack of promotion. I started training him to assess inventory and to complete orders. Then I added sales training, helping him to read the sales data and to strategize sales increases. When I left this position, he was poised to take on a leadership role and was delivering superior customer service in addition to his already superior task performance.
3) Solve frequent STOCK ISSUES. My brain loves data and numbers, so I took a bit of time one day to study the sales data for each area. (It was even divided into individual product sales!) Then I ordered based on the data analysis, ensuring that I had a few extra of each item and additional surplus of top sellers. Then we adjusted daily production, also reducing waste. We rarely ran out of product after that.
4) Resolve PERPETUALLY MESSY seating areas. Easy. I set a cleaning schedule, implemented oversight whether I was there or not, and praised the team for their success. We became 1 of 2 district stores to consistently earn top customer reviews for cleanliness (and everything else) and celebrated as a team.
