Research

  • 1st Author, Adopting Masculine Norms and Mental Health Stigma: A Complex Link.
  • 2nd Author, Fast-Tracked or Sidetracked? Rethinking Early College.
  • At the start of my junior year at Western Carolina University, I took on an independent research project under the mentorship of Dr. Ellen Sigler, exploring the connection between masculinity and mental health. I wanted to understand how high levels of masculinity-regardless of gender identity-contribute to negative stigmas around mental health and discourage people from seeking help. The research process was hands-on and immersive, involving deep dives into existing literature, designing surveys, gathering data, and running statistical analyses to identify meaningful trends. Our goal was to highlight how societal expectations around masculinity reinforce stigma and create barriers to mental health support. Alongside this project, I also served as the second author on another study examining the experiences of students who transition straight from high school to their junior year of college through early college programs. We looked at how these students adjust academically and socially, as well as the impact on their overall well-being. This research felt especially personal to me, as I'm on track to earn my four-year degree at 19, so I know firsthand the unique challenges of an accelerated academic path. Both projects led to an incredible opportunity to present our findings at the Southeastern Psychological Association (SEPA) conference in April 2025 in Atlanta, Georgia. Sharing our work with researchers, professors, and students sparked important conversations and gave me valuable feedback that strengthened my research skills. More than anything, it confirmed my passion for studying psychology and using research to make a real impact.
