2A551 The Air Force AFSC 2A551 Airlift/Special Mission Aircraft Maintenance crew chief, responsible for servicing, inspecting, and repairing heavy transport aircraft like the C-17. They ensure aircraft are safe for flight, performing pre/post-flight inspections and managing repairs.

Key Responsibilities and Details:

• Crew Chief for large, multi-engine aircraft (e.g., C-17, C-5, C-130).
• Duties: Perform pre-flight, through-flight, and post-flight inspections, check engine oil and hydraulic fluids, change tires, and maintain flight controls.
• Launch/Recovery: Marshal aircraft in and out of parking spots, assisting flight engineers.
• Troubleshooting: Identify issues and coordinate with specialized maintenance teams (avionics, hydraulics, engines).
• Environment: High-tempo, often requiring 12+ hour shifts, working in all weather conditions, and potential deployment.
• Requirements: ability to lift 80 lbs, and a high attention to detail.
• Training: Technical training occurs at Sheppard AFB, TX.
