I have always enjoyed fixing things. So being a technician was a good fit. As time went on I found that helping people in my community meant more. I worked in the community I lived in for almost 30 Years. Having the trust of them means everything. I have found that integrity and honesty is the most important aspect of being a service writer/manager. It takes time to develop that. Showing empathy and concern means a lot but to live it is the import part of that process.
When my customer base says they trust me and are willing to do repairs as I suggest is everything. I know how hard that is to gain and so easy to lose. I have found that being personable but not to engaging works. Bringing some humor can deescalate situations. Automotive repair can be so stressful to people. When they know they have good people to help...that alone is huge. I would like to bring my skills to another repair facility.
Having worked 60 hours a week for many years has been at times exhausting. With that it does show a strong work ethic. I do not like to just stand around. Accomplishing any and all tasks is what I feel you need to do as an employee.
As a technician I excelled in under car care Excelling in brake diagnostics I also was proficient in doing custom exhaust on many types of vehicles Doing all types of chassis and suspension work Having 37 years on the floor doing this has allowed me to be able to teach many technicians multiple secret tips on how to repair vehicles in a very timely manor I have taught many young technicians in my career including kids from the local school Many who were troubled kids trying to find their way I always tried to mentor them as best as possible in the hope of guiding them to be better men It was one of my most cherished memories
I did not go to school for automotive repair. Everything was learned on the floor. I was fortunate to work with great people.
I was able to become an ASE master technician with my L1 certification. Even though I did not do a lot of drivability I have a good sense of how it all works. That has worked well for me as a manager.
