Growing up, I had an abundance of experience with special needs individuals. My father’s brother and cousin are both on the spectrum. My uncle is severely autistic and requires substantial attention. He lives with our family six months out of the year. My father’s cousin is high functioning and primarily requires guidance and empathy. I have always taken the initiative to help them as needed and also just be their friend. Having that personal experience throughout my entire life, I have gained considerable knowledge on the complexities of autism. I also participated in many "United" classes in high school where we would help students with disabilities to participate in classes with lesson plans created by us. From my experience, I have learned that patience, understanding, empathy and love are essential in helping those individuals on the spectrum.
