Work History

FRI Research Mentor

Department of Biology, UT Austin
04.2019 - 09.2019
  • Researched methods for optimizing the growth, harvesting, and extraction of algae in a controlled indoor(greenhouse) and outdoor environment for biofuel production
  • Cultivated various species of algae through certification to work in the UTEX laboratory to provide algae specimen for research
  • Mentored two groups of high school students, guiding them through the Scientific method and teaching them critical safety and procedural skills in the lab

Researcher

Department of Biology, UT Austin
09.2019 - 03.2020

• As part of a research team, collaborated with others to innovate an efficient vertical hydroponics system for sustaining crop production in cities

• Researched cost-productive and reusable materials and began to develop a design for a new hydroponics system

Additional Research Experience

  • I worked with Texas A&M Corpus Christi to contribute to their ongoing experiments monitoring ecological factors in a mangrove environment and in Corpus Christi Bay. Multiple trawls were conducted at different locations, and the species and their sizes were recorded and added to the decades-long data collection. Water quality was also tested at these locations, measuring pH, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and other abiotic factors. Additionally, another experiment was conducted in which species composition was monitored along various transect lines, based on varying distances from the water's edge.
  • I conducted a field experiment to examine the effect of receiving sunlight in the morning versus the afternoon on the growth rate of Turks Cap, a species of plant, over a three-month period. Ten subjects were monitored, spread throughout a forest, and GPS was used to pinpoint their exact locations. Data was collected weekly.

Projects

Academic Project 1  I performed data wrangling to transform large datasets into usable and meaningful statistics for analysis. Using DPLYR and other R packages in R Studio, I combined and manipulated multiple datasets to analyze trends and extract significant statistics related to state regions, areas, and populations.

Academic Project 2  I performed multivariate statistical analysis on a dataset consisting of three independent variables. The data was displayed in various formats, including tables, charts, graphs, and 3D models. The analysis included MANOVA and ANOVA, randomization tests, linear regression models, and logistic and LASSO regressions of the three variables to identify statistical significance for further analysis.
