The goal of the study was to discover bacteria indigenous to Florida’s west coast that show signs of algicidal activity against K.brevis.The take away was this study can help elucidate bacterial-HAB interactions in the Gulf of Mexico and provide targets for the compound identification and further testing of these compounds for the control of Florida red tide blooms.Next step Future collaborations with Mote Marine Laboratory’s Environmental Laboratory for forensics (ELF) in identification of algicidal compounds.Future work plans to continue to screen bacteria for algicidal activity, as well as perform enrichment assays with 9 more water samples collected from Florida red tide blooms within the Gulf of Mexico. The expected outcome of the proposed project is to have a collection of algicidal bacteria for compound characterization, with the ultimate goal of testing these compounds for control of K. brevis blooms.
