Work History

Trauma ED Supervisor

OU Health
06.2019 - Current
  • Strategize and coordinate with trauma surgeons, ER physicians, and department leaders to integrate new evidence based trauma leveling criteria, care guidelines and protocols. Continued evaluation of all trauma systematic processes and care guidelines based on the American College of Surgeons trauma standards.
  • Develop and implement competency-based education programs, train-the-trainer and end-user programs. One such example is the education for our new trauma control nurses and trauma Floats, called "Trauma boot camp" where we teach the fundamentals of what a trauma center means and the basic rules set forth by the ACS. This education lays the groundwork for them as they start their orientation in the trauma ER.
  • I developed the trauma narrator in Epic for OU, along with the help of a few key figures as we prepared to transition from paper charting to EHR via Epic. This was a huge undertaking over the last 2 years.
  • Devise continuing education programs integrating new trends and new processes. I spearhead a program called "Trauma Case Reviews", where the trauma surgeons, trauma program staff and I, select distinct trauma cases to review with the trauma control nurses. We meet in a conference room and review the case from beginning to end taking away key educational points along the way. We play the EMS encode aloud to the room, present the case verbally with imaging showing on the screen, as the trauma attendings discuss care decisions, temporizing measures considered, differential diagnoses, and point out key lessons to take away. The staff provides feedback on other possible ideas and priceless dialogue ensues.
  • I conduct new hire orientation and verify sufficient training of new trauma control nurses before releasing them to operate in the trauma bay.
  • Assess equipment acquisition and training needs and make recommendations to program director.
  • Scheduled educational activities, faculty lectures and departmental events to drive mission and values of institution. I assist in performing Mock traumas to educate staff and comply with ACS standards. I teach TNCC for OU Health, and also guest lecture for our hospital guided "burn boot camp" class.
  • Train new nurses in proper techniques, care standards, operational procedures, and safety protocols. I am certified in US guided peripheral IV placement and also as an instructor. I perform this for patients as needed as well as train new TCNs in obtaining this skill .
  • Audit charts and reviewed clinical documents to verify accuracy.
  • I operate as a blend of trauma ED manager and floor supervisor. I am frequently on the floor assisting staff with patient care, procedures, clinical care coordination and collaboration with trauma physicians, and patient throughput and flow. But I also work out of an office, and work m-f primarily, attending department and hospital wide meetings. I act as the liaison between the trauma program, trauma attendings, and department leadership.
  • I plan, hold, and execute department meetings with staff.
  • I co-lead the trauma Resuscitation monthly meeting along with Dr. Celii. This meeting is a collaboration of physicians, providers, nurses, ancillary staff, and leaders that meet about all aspects of trauma care, processes, etc provided in the trauma ED.
  • I coordinate and handle all trauma Control nurse scheduling complying with the matrix given by the hospital.
  • Conduct various QI/QA in collaboration with the trauma program
