Work History

Inmate Counselor

Federal Bureau Of Prisons / Department of Justice
Leavenworth, KS
12.1999 - 12.2024
  • I started out as a corrections officer. Supervise the activities of inmates, and ensure they follow established policies and procedures. Search inmates and their living quarters for contraband items. I found over 300 homemade weapons, and I had over 600 drug busts.
  • I was on the Special Operations Team (S.O.R.T.), from 2000 to 2012. Here, I was a sniper, repel master, lead firearms instructor, and ended my time on the team as the SORT leader as a lieutenant.
  • I was a firearms instructor from 2004 to 2024, when I finally retired.
  • Promoted to lieutenant in January 2010. I supervised around 200 staff members and 1,200 inmates daily. I did daily staff assignments and hired overtime. I trained staff to respond to emergencies, riots, confrontations, and physical altercations, and the need for the use of force or restraints. I conducted audits and corrective actions on areas that needed improvement. Knowing the location of inmates at all times, and escorting inmates to various locations, such as courtrooms or medical facilities. Respond to emergencies, including fights, and escape attempts.
  • In August 2012, I became an inmate counselor. I dealt with courts, judges, and lawyers on a weekly basis. I set up contracts for inmates to pay their court fines, fees, and victims while in prison. If an inmate fails to make payments, I would put them in refuse status, only allowing them to spend $25 a month on commissary until they make the payments. Did NCIC checks on all inmate visitors prior to allowing them to enter our facility? In charge of paying, hiring inmate orderlies. Disciplinary sanctions on inmates who didn't follow rules and regulations include taking their commissary, phones, email, and visits for 7 days up to 120 days. Complete administrative tasks, such as writing reports and updating inmate files. I was in charge of the inmates who were veterans; here, I got them all the contacts and made sure they had the tools when released from custody.
