Duty #1- Invasive Plant Management
-Assist in field implementation of non-native invasive plant management program. Responsible for 1 million acres in Glacier National Park in front-country and backcountry.
-Survey and identify noxious weeds within Glacier National Park. Collect data on treatment sights including number of species and percent coverage of unit. Continually monitor treatment sights to survey for effectiveness of treatment.
-Follow instructions to collect and organize field data for GIS purposes
-Use GPS units to navigate treatment sights.
-Treat noxious weeds with herbicide from backpack, UTV, and UTV boom sprayer. Collect data on amount of chemical used.
Duty # 2- Hazard Tree Management
-Conduct hazard tree surveys throughout Glacier National Park, and conduct mitigation actions such as debris removal and cutting tree down
-Safely fall hazard trees using a chainsaw. Clean and maintain chainsaws in good working conditions and troubleshoot mechanical issues
Duty #3- Boundary Fence Construction and Repair
-Responsible for boundary fence construction and repair to keep out livestock from Park Service land.
-Walk up steep slopes often carrying heavy equipment such as barbed wire, smooth wire, chainsaws, rockbars, t-posts shovels, and other digging tools.
-Rebuild H braces, and run barbed wire line from H brace to H brace. Clip barbed wire to t-posts in ground. Carry out any excess scrap to minimize impact to Park Service land
-Supervise and lead Montana Conservation Corps Fencing Crews in boundary fence construction.
Duty #4- Firefighter Type 2: Glacier National Park
-Assist Glacier National Park Fire Crew on severity days. Patrol park and respond to fire incidents
-Perform all aspects of wildland and prescribed fire operations including preparation, ignition, monitoring, holding, and mop-up.
-Hike up steep slopes and hazardous terrain for extended periods of time performing mop-up. Dig out and extinguish any flames or smokes coming from burned area.
-Conduct burnout operations using a drip torch and fusees.
-Go out on patrols to monitor burnout activities and monitor active fire front.
-Dig fire line around slopovers with hand tools.
-Often work 16 hour days when out on fire incident.
Duty #5- Miscellaneous
-Assist Park Service Rangers on Search and Rescue missions.
-Assist revegetation crew in collecting whitebark pinecones. Carry equipment up and down steep slopes in backcountry sites.
-Provide information to visitors and employees on Natural Resource Management activities. Assist volunteers in identifying invasive plant species.
-Primary Duty #1- Operate chainsaws to eliminate deer brush on reforestation project sites. Hours included 8 day shift from 7am-4pm.
-Primary duty #2- Spraying herbicide on woody brush including bear clover, deer brush, whitethorn on reforestation project sites. Communicate with coworkers to identify spray lines and boundary flags. Occasionally flag last spray line and track progress on Avenza maps. Calculate acres sprayed and gallons per acre sprayed on Avenza maps. Work from 4:30am-2:30pm for 8 days in row.
