Piano
I have been playing piano since I was 6, about 13 years now. I have passed all my CM Tests up to the Advanced Level. Music has taught me how to multitask and think quickly in recalling memories. I stopped going to lessons after passing my last CM exam. However, I play daily, learning family-friendly songs and just keeping the music with me.
Dance
I have attended Armenian dance classes at the Nairi Dance Studio for nine years. I have learned more about my culture and expanded my knowledge of other dance genres, from Samba to Cha Cha to Greek. Learning dances from different cultures allows me to affiliate with more individuals in those cultures and also enables me to build connections with the students in my class. Having about 20-30 students in a group allowed me to lead and teach the little children different moves they had trouble with while the teacher was busy putting the spots. Overall, dance allowed me to practice my leadership and organization skills and develop my communication skills.
Cooking
Cooking has been something that I have taken up since COVID. Being stuck at home, it's hard to stay busy, so I started cooking for my family. Diving into different cuisines every week allowed me to develop other techniques and learn about different cultures' popular foods. It also allowed me to increase my multitasking and organizational skills. I was chopping and cooking simultaneously and keeping the kitchen clean, which was manageable when I was finished.
Volunteering
Volunteering has been a big part of why I chose what I want to do in the future. I have been volunteering at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center for six years now, on and off, because of COVID-19. I have done wheelchair duty, where I asked patients if they needed a wheelchair and took them to their appointments or designated specialties. I have also dappled in recreational and physical therapy. Although both of these are very different, they help patients get back to their regular activity. For recreational treatment, I made bracelet kits, printed coloring pages, and organized various patient activities. In physical therapy, I cleaned and sanitized the dirty beds, grabbed whatever the therapists needed for their patients, and managed the floor to prevent accidents. These two specialties have increased my communication skills with patients and therapists and increased my quick learning and thinking. Lastly, I volunteered in the labor and delivery area. In this area, I checked patients in, took blood samples to the lab, and organized the patient's medical information. It increased my communication skills with the patients and the nurses/doctors, my organization skills with essential documents, and my ability to take labs down and come back up quickly. Overall, volunteering has helped me increase my desire and eagerness to be a nurse because helping and participating in similar activities increased my interest, and connecting with the patients has been an enjoyable process through all of this.
