CUST

  • The name CompTIA stand for Computing Technology Industry Association. It first started out as Association of Better Computer Dealers but in 1990 was changed into what it is known as now. The company has more than 2,000 members, 3,000 academic and training partners and tens of thousands of registered users spanning the entire information communications and technology industry or ICT for short. The first exam was not offered until 1993 when the first A+ was developed as a way for new technicians to demonstrate competency when performing a variety of basic computer installation, repair and maintenance tasks. In 2003 the first update of the exam made it so you had to pass two separate exams: the A+ Core Hardware and the A+ Core Operating system exam. In 2006, 2009, and 2012 there were updates made to make the exam to the requirement needed for today’s ever advancing computer technologies. It take roughly 90 minutes to complete the tests 90 multiple choice and performance based questions. Individuals who originally became certified after January, 2011 must retake the exam every three years to renew their certificate, but before than it was originally designed to last a lifetime.
  • Some tidbits:
  • 1. The 25 year old based company is based outside of Chicago, but has offices all over the world. It also contributes to education, advocacy, and philanthropic organizations.
  • 2. The CompTIA currently offers 16 IT certifications, including the A+, Network+ and IT Project+ certifications. The newest addition is the Cloud Essential certificate.
  • 3. Professionals working in the field of their certification can waive this requirement with proof of adequate use.
  • 4. CompTIA only offers certifications, training, and testing. Almost all other certification organizations also sell products. Partially because of this, CompTIA certifications are vendor-neutral.
