Supervisor/Preceptor: Jennifer (Lead Echo Tech)
Dates of Clinical Rotation: 01/2025-04/2025

Overview:

As an echocardiogram student, I had the opportunity to work alongside experienced echocardiographers and cardiologists to learn the fundamentals of performing and interpreting transthoracic echocardiograms (TTE). My clinical rotation provided hands-on experience in acquiring high-quality images and assisting with the assessment of various cardiac conditions.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Patient Preparation: Assisted in preparing patients for echocardiogram procedures, ensuring comfort and explaining the procedure to reduce anxiety.
Took detailed medical histories from patients, including relevant cardiovascular risk factors and symptoms.
Measured and documented vital signs prior to the procedure.
  • Echocardiogram Imaging: Performed echocardiogram procedures under supervision, utilizing standard 2D, M-mode, Doppler, and color Doppler techniques.
Assisted with imaging from various windows, including parasternal, apical, subcostal, and suprasternal views.
Captured images and videos of the heart’s structures, including the left and right ventricles, atria, valves, and major vessels, while ensuring optimal visualization.
  • Image Review and Quality Control: Assisted in reviewing acquired images to ensure that they met diagnostic standards for optimal interpretation.
Evaluated image quality and made adjustments to gain clear images in challenging patient conditions, such as obesity or lung disease.
  • Clinical Observation and Interpretation: Observed the interpretation of echocardiograms by supervising echocardiographers and cardiologists.
Gained exposure to various cardiac conditions, including valve disease (e.g., mitral regurgitation, aortic stenosis), heart failure, pericardial effusion, and congenital heart defects.
Participated in discussions regarding diagnostic results and treatment options based on echocardiography findings.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Assisted in documenting echocardiogram findings in the patient’s medical records, including measurements of heart chamber sizes, valve function, and ejection fraction.
Gained experience in writing preliminary reports based on the findings of the echocardiogram, which were later reviewed by the supervising cardiologist.
  • Patient Interaction:Developed communication skills by interacting with diverse patient populations, including those with significant cardiovascular issues.
Provided explanations to patients regarding what to expect during the procedure and any post-procedure care instructions.
Skills Developed:
  • Technical Skills:Proficient in operating ultrasound equipment and optimizing imaging settings.
Experience with Doppler techniques to assess blood flow and identify abnormalities.
Ability to obtain various echocardiographic views and recognize normal versus abnormal findings.
  • Clinical Knowledge:Understanding of normal heart anatomy and physiology as seen on echocardiograms.
Exposure to a variety of cardiac pathologies and their echocardiographic manifestations.
Familiarity with echocardiographic measurements, including ejection fraction, valve function, and chamber sizes.
  • Communication and Teamwork:Collaborated with a multidisciplinary team, including cardiologists, physicians, nurses, and other allied health professionals.
Developed strong patient communication skills, ensuring patients were comfortable and informed throughout the procedure.
Reflection:

This clinical rotation in echocardiography provided invaluable experience in the technical aspects of cardiac imaging and enhanced my ability to perform and interpret echocardiograms. I gained a deeper understanding of the role of echocardiography in diagnosing and managing heart disease. The hands-on experience, coupled with supervision and mentorship, has solidified my interest in the field of cardiovascular diagnostics and has prepared me for further clinical challenges.
