I attended the Envision - National Youth Leadership Forum (NYLF): Medicine at the University of Maryland from July 25 - August 2, 2019.
The Clinical Skills workshops allowed me to step into the shoes of a medical practitioner and gain hands-on practice in core medical skills, such as: suturing, blood pressure, phlebotomy, and the neurological exam. I was guided through the process by the trained members staff who demonstrated proper methods for suturing and measuring basic values such as heart rate and blood pressure. I also practiced the basic procedures of drawing blood and inserting an IV line on trainer equipment, as well as learn the purpose and components of a neurological exam.
This experience provided me instruction, demonstration, and hands-on practice of the core skills that are considered the foundation of a career in the medical field. I visited the Washington University School of Nursing's Simulation Learning and Innovation Center, where I saw firsthand the latest technology being used in medical procedures. I learned about the protocol medical professionals undertake in times of mass disaster and participated in the Disaster Triage simulation at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. I learned wilderness survival techniques in the emergency medicine workshops, When Care Is Hours Away. The realistic simulation was created by wilderness professors in the Stanford School of Medicine's Department of Emergency Medicine. I also participated in an Introduction to Medical Ethics and worked through various ethical scenarios.
