Joey Borovicka

After pivoting away from teaching art ten years ago, I've found great job satisfaction as the circulation manager for the three largest branches of a vibrant library district.

• I currently supervise 23 individuals on two different teams for the flagship location. We're responsible for the experience of around 350,000 patrons per year, and handling around 1.5 million items. We promote library events, manage library accounts, and manage around 14,000 meeting room reservations per year.
• I’m responsible for the hiring of these two teams as well as mentoring, scheduling, evaluation, and corrective action.
• Within the department I coordinate projects, conduct meetings, track statistics, develop procedures, manage a supply budget, and make daily bank deposits.
• Within the building I maintain safety and serve patrons directly in person, over the phone, and via email.
• At the district-wide level, I teach customer service basics to all new staff using an empathy-driven approach.
• I serve on committees that develop library policy and shape staff training.
• I have attended library conferences at the state and national level, and helped plan the 2022 Missouri Library Association conference.

After receiving an MFA in painting, I taught adjunct at the university level while pursuing full-time teaching positions.

• I developed curriculum and taught painting, drawing, and design for the Art + Design Department while maintaining my own painting practice and exhibition record.

For four summers I was a visual arts faculty member for an interdisciplinary summer arts program for high school juniors and seniors.

• I taught workshops in design, experimental drawing and painting, digital art, and performance art.
• This program emphasized an open-ended, collaborative, and experimental approach to art-making.

While pursuing a full-time career teaching art at the university level, I supplemented my income by returning to a part-time library position I'd held while in college.

• Served patrons in person and over the phone.
• Checked library materials in and out of library.
• Collected fines and enforced circulation policy.
• Provided directional information.
• Promoted library events and services.
• Maintained patron privacy.
• Trained new employees.
• Intentionally approached work with a positive and empathetic attitude.
• Continually reflected on my performance in order to grow.
• This position ended when I was promoted to a supervisory position.
