I was apart of BSA (Boy Scouts of America) for 11 years eventually reaching the rank of Eagle Scout. Over my career I earned 26 merit badges. In regards to scout government i was Assistant Senior Patrol Leader for 1 year, and Senior patrol leader for 1 year. This position entailed planning events and meetings, seeing over 40+ other scouts within my troop, and coordinating fundraisers and charity events. For my Eagle Project, I created breeding grounds for oyster species by filling bins with cement and placing oyster shells upright in the mixture with them all facing outward. I then lines the bank of the St. Johns river with several hundred feet of these oyster blocks with a team of other scouts, friends, and family that I had put together beforehand. During oyster breeding season, (May-August) the water temperatures rise, and the oysters release sperm and eggs into the water. These eggs find their way to my oyster blocks by current, and latch onto the existing oysters to be fertilized. Over the next decade, these blocks will grow larger and larger; this promotes water clarity (oysters naturally filter water as it passes over them), stability of river banks and erosion prevention (oysters act as a barrier and/or 'glue' to help hold banks and islands together), and also promotes biodiversity (better water clarity helps to bring in new species and provide new grounds for feeding and breeding). Overall this project and journey was enjoyable, educational, and beneficial to me and my community as a whole.
