Theravada Buddhist Monk

05.1991 - 05.2021
  • I was ordained in the Taungpulu forest tradition of Myanmar/Burma, and dedicated thirty years of my life to meditation, study, self-restraint, morality, and austerity
  • I eventually became abbot of a forest monastery in northwestern Burma and a Great Elder (Mahathera) in the Theravada Buddhist Order
  • I disrobed from the monkhood because I wanted to live in my native country of America, living in accordance with all the ancient Indian rules of discipline is almost impossible in western culture, and I felt that if I could not practice strictly in America I should not continue being a monk
  • Also I did not want to spend the rest of my life in solitude
  • I have written a great deal, mainly on Buddhist and philosophical topics, and have given public talks and taught students on an individual basis
