  • Acts as Sheriff when the Sheriff is unavailable. This includes making critical decisions, especially when dealing with emergency situations, speaking before the Board of Supervisors or civic groups, conducting media interviews and interacting with other law enforcement chief executives
  • Responsible for the complete re-write of our policy and procedure manual. We are utilizing Lexipol, a national company that provides law enforcement policy templates geared towards Iowa law and best practices. I take these policies and adapt them to our Offices use. Lexipol is web based software and it will allow our deputies and civilian staff to be able to access the policies online rather than in a printed book
  • Responsible for preparing the Sheriff's information that is presented each year to the Linn County Compensation Board, which includes gathering relevant law enforcement chief executive pay information, compiling it and forwarding it to the Sheriff so he can present it to the compensation board as they make a determination on pay recommendation to the Linn County Board of Supervisors
  • Participates in labor/management meetings, disciplinary hearings, hiring interviews, new hire swearing in and any other personnel issues. We have an open door policy in our Office, so any employee is encouraged to come in and talk to myself or the Sheriff with any issues
  • Authorizes personnel changes that are made within our agency, to include hiring, transfers, resignations, etc.
  • Assists in placing social media information on Twitter and also preparing and sending press releases as needed

  • Oversaw the running of the Linn County Sheriff's Office Civil Division and General Services Division. The divisions consisted of six uniformed deputies, two plainclothes sergeants and six civilian clerical staff
  • Assured that court produced orders were served on specific individuals
  • Responsible for preparing home foreclosure sales, advertising the sale and conducting the sale
  • Responsible for setting up and conducting land condemnation sales that were required when eminent domain was used by government entities to acquire land for improvements or right-of-way acquisition
  • Increased our Civil revenue to more than one million dollars per year by contacting private law firms and convincing them that the Sheriff's Office was the best organization to serve their legal papers
  • Oversaw the transition in the Civil Division from paper records to a software based program that allowed civil information such as sales, foreclosures, etc. to be available on the internet
  • Ensured that equipment and supplies were ordered on time and in budget
  • Coordinated the move of our Office and staff to the old Abbe Center building on County Home Road after the 2008 flood
  • Coordinated the leasing and purchasing of new and used office equipment, computers, door access technology, lighting equipment and other electrical services and working with contractors
  • Accomplished the opening of the new Office in a three week timespan
  • Assisted in the coordination of the rebuild of our Office after the flood of 2008.

  • Commanded a staff of 46 sworn deputies and 25 civilian staff. The sworn deputies include six uniformed sergeants and two lieutenants
  • Created and reviewed policies to ensure we were in compliance with federal and state laws. Due to holding federal and ICE inmates, policies had to be updated frequently to meet their requirements
  • Ensured that all inmates were given adequate medical care and provided with nutritious meals. The civilian staff included full-time cooks and nurses
  • Assigned on-call twenty-four hours per day, seven days per week for any issues that came up
  • Handled personnel issues to include discipline, hiring, termination, sick leave, vacation scheduling, etc.
