This allowed us to test new scheduling software and not have to purchase double the licenese for the test period. After that we continued to install NWMars at other Novell sites, or a number of years, allowing for data storage expantion, as well as users.
  • 2002 started installing Samba at commercial clients, which allows for competition against Windows NT server at much better pricing, while actually gaining many new features not yet available to Windows servers.
  • 2002 Linux same year, I stared to enlarge the scope of servers and services we delivered, email server, sendmail, postfix, exim4, pop3, imap dns, ftp, web server. Wasn't long after that we were delivering Linux based sql and cobol data servers to client, in some cases running the code, in other cases, such as finance, running programs written for Unix on Linux and gaining huge speed benefits.

Novell Certified Engineer

  • Installed, maintain, repaired and/or trouble shoot large client Novell servers, ver 2.2, 3.11.
  • Maintained client servers across 3 states, often traveling to site.
  • Created users, printers, data shares. Maintained most of these systems as well.
  • Network printing was rather new and Novell's print servers, though picky, were very solid once setup. Good deal of network printing and print server work.
  • Performed Novell server upgrades from 2.1/2.15 to 3.1 at Bank Of America sites from San Diego to San Francisco over a span of 2 weeks. There were 2 of us doing this job, assigned to different banks.

  • Worked with Banyan Vines NOS, LAN manger, IBM's Token Ring.
  • This was the time of DOS 3.3, and Windows 3, which was a shell, meaning it ran on top of DOS. So you had serious RAM issues and spent alot of time sorting out how you would use your little 640K and the few hundred extra K in upper memory.
  • Maintained Novell Servers as well as Dos work stations.

IT Technician

Acom
Long Beach, CA
09.1993 - 07.1998
  • Acom was a IBM and Novell shop, prior to Northridge Earthquake Jan 1994, we primarily service LAN printes and pc's intergation with IBM Toke Ring networks, or Installing and configuring Novell Servers.
  • Northridge Earthquake hit and most of the next year I lived in Northridge. The freeways were broken, couldn't drive back and forth. So, stayed there most of the time, doing emergency services.
  • Pulling Novell and IBM servers out of buildings that were condemned, ran power lines and data line from building to parking lots and tents were I setup the servers, printers and work stations.
  • Due to damage and changes needed to recover services to businesses, learned to run and terminate COAX for ARcnet, Token Ring and Cat3 and Cat5 for Ethernet and Token Ring.
  • Spent the next year moving servers, recovering networks to temporary sites, often outside in parking lots or grassy areas were we could get business up and running.
  • In some sites, we'd run the cable right thru the huge cracks in the wall, like Northridge Hospital.
  • Once companies either repaired their buildings or moved, I've the move the servers, printers and work stations to the new site or back into the old repaired building. Mostly new sites.
  • Built and installed new Novell servers to companies who's servers had been destroyed, which were a few.

Linux

  • Discovered Linux early in my Novell career, at the time it was limited, but it has MARSnw, which allowed me to use Linux and extend out my Novell networks, that was late 1998 and the bug bit. I have continued to use that tool set almost every where and company, hundreds of them, that I've worked for.
  • Needless to say time after time, I've found new software projects in linux Samba, NFS, Backuppc, Sendmail, Postfix, exim4, FTP, Pop, Imap, mySQL and then found places and projects to use them.

Structured Data Cable

  • Jan 1994, Northridge Earth Quake, I'm a new Novell Engineer, now living in Northridge, because freeways are broken takes too long to go home. First thing I discover is, I can't fix any thing, if I can't run then Arcnet data cable and IBM COAX cable.
  • Bought the tools and books and started pulling cable and moving servers
  • I've since been certified in multiple cable systems and mediums, simply because it often allowed me or my team to finish a task or project, that other wise would have required rescheduling, lost time and travel waiting for someone else to provide the needed medium.
