During my freshman year of high school I suffered my first injury I to my hip flexor and this greatly impacted my play on the field.
During this time I was able to tryout for a specific position on the field. In what felt most natural to me striker. I was drawn to striker however I was so good at goal keeper I was force to play as a back up. My skills in goal and at striker came from practicing up 3 age groups against players in my older brothers age group and my dad as well. I was given the number 9 however I was also in contention for the best goalkeeper on the team and due to the coaches wanting to put together the strongest line up posable I was in goal more often than I would have liked.
After my two years with the premier white side another opportunity for growth and advancement arose. I was given the opportunity to try out and play for a team that was considered the highest level available at the time for my age group U10 Premier Blue. Playing at the travel level taught me the fundamentals of the game. Passing and moving to create space for my teammates was a major emphasis in trainings. Technical ability was also of major importance making sure that every pass was on the ground and to the right foot of the receiving player. This was a challenge for me at the time being that the coaches did not want me to rely solely on my physical abilities but to use them in combination with the new technical and tactical aspects of the game that where being taught to me. My coaches at the time where Dutch and drove home a the fundamentals associated with the Dutch style of play, making sure to that I was using the whole width of the pitch, passing the ball and create space after the pass has been played and the implementation of shapes and passing patterns such as the, Diamonds, squares and triangles. I was also able to learn the responsibility's each position on the field setting me up with a foundation to play any position in the future including goalkeeper.
This was one of the major stepping stones in my soccer career taking the jump form REC to Travel soccer and getting to play against some of the best soccer players within my age group on the east coast. This experience gave me the tools need to excel and gather the much needed exposure to take the next step in my soccer career. None of this would have been made possible if it where not for a stroke of luck I was in the wrong place at the right time. I was supposed to be trying out for the select team a level bellow however they moved the tryout location at the last minute to make way for the premier players. After my Father and I had a talk with the coach I was able to tryout and within one day impress the coaches enough to have them place me on the team.
This was my first time playing organized football within a team environment and I was able to quickly excell scoring a collection of 42 goals in both of the seasons combined.
