My title is Veterinary Assistant but I have many additional duties. This hospital is a 4 doctor, large and small animal practice.
On top of my technician duties, I was a receptionist for over 2 years and had the responsibility of those duties too.
In addition I had several admin duties such as:
-making the techs/assistants and highschoolers schedules
-assisted with accounts payable
-main contact for all drug reps and clinic accounts (covetrus, MWI, pet cremation service, microchip company, Idexx, etc.)
-I took end of day deposits to the bank
-continually updated the clinic website with any changes
-in charge of doing nightly walk throughs to ensure everything was done
-did a large percentage of client estimates and billing for the hospital
-handled all statements at beginning of each month and mailed them out
-handled accounts receivable and was in charge of calling clients and making their monthly payments on time
-managed and ordered inventory of medications, supplies, etc., ensuring proper stock levels and expiration dates
-I wrote health certs for small and large animal as well as submitting coggins online
As an Assistant I did the following:
-maintain cleanliness and organization of the clinic and equipment
-assisted veterinarians in various tasks such as, handling and restraining animals for medical procedures and other surgeries, physical examinations, preparing medications, etc.
-proficient in administering medications, vaccines, and treatments as prescribed by the veterinarians
-skilled in performing diagnostic tests such as bloodwork, x-rays, urinalysis, and fecal exams as well as analyzing results
-educate pet owners on proper care and treatment of their pets
-clean and sterilize equipment and exam rooms to maintain a sanitary environment
-assist with euthanasia procedures and provide emotional support to grieving pet owners. I also created clay and ink paw/nose prints to send out with their sympathy cards
-took pictures and performed blood draws on horses to submit for coggins testing
-all grooming duties such as baths/blowouts and all cat shaves
As a receptionist I did the following:
-scheduling appointments, answer emails and phone calls, and assisted with client communication
-communicate with veterinarians and staff to ensure smooth patient flow, efficient service, and client satisfaction
-maintain accurate patient and client records, update client information and patient medical history
-checking in clients and their pets as they arrive at the hospital and making sure all necessary paperwork is complete
-collect payments for services rendered
My title is Kennel Tech but I have many additional duties. This clinic is a 4 doctor, large and small animal practice.
My responsibilities include:
-feeding and watering
-medicating
-walking
-collecting urine and fecal specimens for testing
-cleaning kennels and stalls
-spraying down play yards
-doing dishes and laundry
-cleaning the whole clinic (sweeping, mopping, empty trashes, dusting, cleaning after surgeries, etc.)
-restrain animals for nail trims, shots, etc.
I've had much practice at rolling veins and holding off for blood draws. I assist all the doctors in many areas including dispensing medications. I have experience interacting with clients. I have been entrusted with after hours animal care and access to the controlled substance safe
I worked for a deployed member of the military taking care of her horses and barn until she came home.
At that time I was responsible for 7 mature horses, including a special needs horse and a newborn foal. My duties included:
-feeding and watering
-grooming
-stall cleaning
-medicating
-keeping the barn picked up and organized
In addition, I was also responsible for working on the foal's socialization skills as well as desensitization.
