Summer Park Ranger

  • Successfully operated under Recreation One Stop (R1S) program to assist visitors with check-in and check-out operations and confirmed correct campsite locations
  • Worked alongside park host volunteers to confirm daily and annual passes were purchased and displayed correctly
  • Assisted park hosts to open and close parks at scheduled times
  • Performed monthly VERS checks and recorded the data in a spreadsheet to submit annually
  • Patrolled parks and properly enforced Title 36 CFR Part 327 by educating visitors on park policies and regulations to ensure a safe park environment
  • Coordinated with Bell County Fire Department and EMS, Bell County Sheriff Department, Belton PD, Harker Heights PD, and TWPD Game Wardens to successfully locate missing hikers, mountain bikers, and assisted with rescue and recoveries within the parks and on the water
  • Maintained a good working relationship with the various agencies and have completed CPR, First Aid, and AED training to be able to assist with medical incidents
  • Assisted other rangers, as well as TPWD Game Wardens, with patrolling the lake by boat, stopping boats, jet skis, and kayaks to ensure proper safety equipment was on board, and taking necessary action if not present
  • Spearheaded a mapping project to catalog every sign at Stillhouse Hollow Lake. With the use of JECOP and Field Maps, I was able to take complete inventory of all the signs, with photos, categorize them by their purpose, and save all the coordinates to create a map that can be used for future projects and inventory purposes
  • Operated fleet vehicles, performed daily vehicle inspections, scheduled routine maintenance such as oil changes and tire rotations, and kept appropriate mile logs to submit monthly to Facilities and Equipment Maintenance (FEM)
  • Towed various equipment such as flatbed trailers, programmable traffic signs, and boats to parks and other USACE offices when needed
  • Helped park visitors with RV needs and maintained cleanliness of dump stations
  • Assisted with Flood Risk Management (FRM) operations by participating in annual dam inspections. Walked the dam looking for compromising holes or cracks that threatened the infrastructure integrity of the dam. Inspected the groin and spillway for any abnormalities or excessive flora growth
  • Learned to take piezometer readings throughout the dam and measured water flow in weirs
  • Performed routine safety checks with the CDSO of the facilities and worked in the security program to help complete daily inspections of the lake office and control tower
  • Coordinated a schedule of monthly inspections of beaches and playgrounds for all rangers to perform under regulations of Engineer Manual (EM) 1110-1-400 to maintain safe recreation areas
  • Accomplished daily checks of PFD loaner stations to ensure proper safety equipment was always present and readily accessible
  • Collaborated with permanent rangers and the lake manager to investigate potential encroachments and trespasses on USACE land by doing shoreline inspections and using ArcGIS and Field Maps to find boundary markers
  • Participated in real estate meetings that discussed the potential future of a leased park and how to work with the lessee on correcting issues to stay in regulation with ER 1130-2-550 and EM 1110-1-400
  • Worked with TPWD to research invasive zebra mussels through conducting surveys of incoming and outgoing boater's knowledge of the species. Through that outreach program, I developed a working relationship with the public and was able to educate on how to stop the spread of this invasive species in Texas lakes while performing boat inspections to ensure proper safe equipment was on the vessel
  • Conducted market research and wrote PR&Cs for equipment such as new gates, updated water depth gauges for swim beach in regulation with EM 1110-1-400, and piezometer testing supplies
  • Coordinated with a volunteer group for park cleanup. I had them fill out AHAs and gave them a presentation of the hazards they may encounter such as slips, trips, falls, PPE, mobilization and demobilization, environmental dangers, and, more importantly, how to mitigate those hazards
  • Started the USACE Ranger Training Program with 20% completion after 5 months. I read over Lake Operation Management Plans (OMPs), Environmental Assessments (EAs), Master Plans (MPs), Standard Operation Procedures (SOPs), Shoreline Management Plans and Statements (SMPs), and various Engineer Manuals (EMs), Engineer Pamphlets (EPs), and Engineer Regulations (ERs). These were discussed with other rangers to ensure a good understanding of why these are important in our workplace and how to access them using the NRM Gateway and Intranet SharePoint
