This position provides both clerical support and patient care responsibilities. Clerical support is
provided to the nursing departments through coordination of communication, transcription of
provider orders, and maintenance of unit supplies. Patient care is provided by assisting the
professional nurse in meeting basic activity of daily living (ADL) needs of the patient while
maintaining an orderly and safe physical environment as well as venipuncture, IV starts, assisting
with medical procedures.

General duties

• Correctly prioritizes work based on order parameters and responds to critical needs. Assists co-workers in completion of work

• Perform standard procedures for identifying patients

• Document specimen collections and testing according to standard procedure in the electronic health record (EHR) and the laboratory information system (LIS). Communicate any problems or issues with the patient care team

• Clean equipment between patient contact

• Troubleshoots equipment in event of malfunction. Alerts Bio-Electronics and/or IT helpdesk if needed

Phlebotomy specific tasks

• Perform blood drawing procedures including venipuncture and capillary collection, standard labeling, and transporting specimens according to specimen requirements and standard protocol

EKG specific tasks

• Performs electrocardiogram procedure and transfers data to EHR.

• Operates and performs routine maintenance on EKG cart according to procedure

• Follows critical value provider protocol notification and documentation

• Cleaned and sterilized tools and equipment to maximize purity of specimens.
• Maintained a high level of accuracy in test results by following strict quality control procedures.
• Contributed to a safe working environment by consistently following established safety procedures and guidelines within the lab setting.

Responsibilities

I worked assisting the nurse in the delivery of patient care, transporting patient and/or equipment, setting up and maintaining patient rooms, and re-ordering and stocking supplies.

Provides patient care by:

• Provides emergency care to patients in the emergency room by supervising the patient’s vital signs Assists point of care testing, IV-line setup, discontinuation of IV, enema, suture removal, restraint application, catheterization, 12 lead EKG, collection specimens

• Transports medical samples from patients under direction of RN, such as blood, urine, or others Promptly responds to call lights/requests Demonstrates concern for patient dignity, privacy, and confidentiality

• Assists in resuscitation with appropriate CPR and bag/valve mask

• Provides for patient safety (i.e. patient safety sitter) and advises RN of patient observations Documents patient care activities and procedures on the nursing records ensuring documentation is clear, concise, accurate, and timely

• Maintains room/unit and supplies: Restocks room, supplies, carts and oxygen tanks Assists with patient room clean-up between patients Completes room and cart checklist
