The Housing Sergeant is a first line supervisor. The position requires supervision of a specific housing area each shift and is responsible for maintaining the security of the facility as well as custody of the inmate population. The Housing Sergeant is relied upon to exercise mature judgement and function with a minimum of direct supervision.
Reports for duty, ready to work, at assigned time for briefing and post assignment. Investigate disciplinary problems and intervenes in situations beyond the authority of subordinates. Observes facility, personnel and inmates from the standpoint of security, morale. and employee-inmate relations. Conducts and maintain accurate counts of inmate at all times including counts at irregular times. Maintain a neat, clean, well groomed, professional appearance at all times while in uniform. The facility uniform will be worn as a complete set as specified in facility policy and procedures. Investigates and report all questionable illicit activities involving either staff or inmates to include minor and major disciplinary infractions, accidents and incidents reports. Instructs and counsel inmates to ensure their cooperation with facility rules and regulations. Prepares reports connected with position responsibilities to include special progress reports, work reports, disciplinary infractions, accidents (both minor and major), and incident reports. Supervises drills and other activities to ensure a constant state of readiness adhering to current emergency procedures.Provides relevant information and training to correctional officers and to other housing sergeants during the shift briefing period. Ensures that logbooks are kept current during their shift. Ensures that assigned posts are covered at all times by the correctional officers assigned to them. Submits written recommendations to change facility policies and procedures to improve/correct security, safety, custody, and control within the facility. Makes written annual performance reports of staff under their supervision.
As a correctional officer I have maintained unit rules amongst the detainees, supervised them and observed various groups to ensure the orderly running od the unit as well as the facility. Maintained records and logs, materials, equipment used. Oversee detainees, during meals, visits, recreation, shower times, and during the facility’s counts. Aid detainees in situations where my help is needed. Provide emergency assistance needed, including but not limited to CPR, first aid, escapes of inmates and evacuation procedures. Conducts accurate headcounts and rounds every 30 minutes. Assist intake when receiving a bus escorting the detainees to intake, removing restraints, assisting with paperwork, property and escorting detainees to their proper housing units. As a control room officer, I ensure checks, censuses, and accountability of detainees throughout the institution security cameras, radio, coordinate detainee movement, issue out radios, count keys within the facility, monitor all staff and visitor’s entry and exit into the institution. I perform various Sentry transactions on a daily basis (rosters, transfers, medical trips, incoming and outgoing detainees, and institutional base counts.

Keep daily logs on inmates. Provide prompt and appropriate assistance to those who have been injured, ill, or have suffered trauma. Report any maintenance or repair needs to keep your facility clean.
