  • At phoenix Global I was a hot pit operator, my job duties ranged from using cat 966k/972m front end loader to clean molten slag from under the furnaces at Gerdau Ameristeel, to using a Gradall to clean the ladles that transport the steel around the melt shop, also using KT Grant jack hammering machine to pick the VTD hoods tear bricks out of the ladles and the furnaces, and used cat articulated dump trucks to haul the molten slag to our dumping are to be processed.
  • Equipment that I operated at this job are Cat 966k/972m front end loaders, Cat articulated dump trucks, Euclid/Freightliner water trucks, Gradalls, KT Grant machines, Skidsteers, Sweeper truck.
  • All these pieces of equipment had to be pre inspected before use, fueled, greased, and cleaned out before and at the end of your shift.

  • I started
  • As a grinder in the nishing department where our was to inspect each individual bar that came down the line, the bars would have paint marks that would grind
  • Revealing a bars defect.
  • When you've located the defect visually you would grind it completely out of the bar then you would use a caliper to make sure that the bars diameter is still in spec with customers work order.
  • After the nishing department I went to the Casting department, where I started out as a utility and worked my way up to slidegate operator.
  • It was job to make sure that I didn't mis dierent grades of molten steel together, while also controlling the ow of steel going from the ladles to the tundish.
  • While the ladles is open and the steel is going into the tundish I had to take manual heat temps, keep track of the heat sample,and hydrogen test all to keep the steel in spec of the customers order.

  • At hickory Springs I operated various machines in the tube mill department, I started out stacking tubes on mill 2, worked my way to forklift operator, from that I went machine operator.
  • The rst machine I was put on was a haven cutter. its purpose was to cut long stock into short stock with a 0.20 length tolerance.
  • It was the operators job to keep feeding the machine bundles of steel tubing while also constantly using a linear measuring device to ensure the length doesn't go out of spec.
  • Also after the tubes have been cut to length the go through a deburrer to clean the ends and then get dropped in a rack where I band the bundles up and then move them to the right location after I have printed the tickets out for each individual bundle.
  • The other machine was a modern cutter which is similar to the haven but it chamfers the ends of the tubes in stead of deburring them and has a completely dierent setup for cutting the tubes.

  • At Maverick Trucking I operated 60 ton remote over head cranes to unload heat trailers loaded with steel bars from Gerdau Ameristeel and stacked them in designated areas in the warehouse and also stage to be loaded onto Maverick semi trucks to be shipped to other locations.
  • Taylor 32,000 lb capacity lifts are also used for the same process outside in the bar yards.
  • It was my job to read the doc audits the truckers provided so that I loaded them with the exact number of bundles and heat numbers that goes to the customer.

  • AT Tube City I.m.s my job was to use either a 3 foot or 6 foot oxygen lance to cut up long stock scrap steel bars, steel tubing, or rail road iron into 3 foot peices so that we could send back to gerdau for re melting.
  • This job you had to ll out a pre operation check sheet for each torch you used.
